Crib Question - Slats vs. no slats?

What are the arguments (if any) for getting a crib with slats on all 4 sides vs. a solid head/foot board? Pics below to show what I mean. I know one might be that a bumper won't fit properly with the solid, but curious if there were any safety concerns or others to consider. Thanks!

Re: Crib Question - Slats vs. no slats?

  • Well one of the theories in regards to SIDS is that CO pools around the baby---so solid sided cribs & bumpers impeded the air flow to some degree...which would increase the risk.  I would say that if you have a fan running, especially ceiling fan that the risk of a solid sided crib would be eliminated.

  • If there were serious safety concerns then one of the options wouldn't be on the market.

We are doing slats all the way around.  Most of the conversion beds have a solid headboard/footboard.

  • I think it's just personal preference.
