Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Severe cramping/bleeding 8 days after D&C?

This may be TMI but I had severe cramping this past Friday afternoon (8 days post-D&C) at work. It was so bad i had to lie on my back on the floor in my office. I wasn't bleeding badly (mostly dark brown spotting) until I went to the bathroom and then I felt like I was gushing and I passed some larger clots.

After the D&C I was told i would see most of the bleeding in the days following the procedure but if I was seeing heavy bleeding more than a week later to call my doc so after I was dealing with all this I called my OB's office and they said to go to the emergency room since their office was closing shortly. I was pretty scared and upset because I really  just want this physical part to be over with. When I went they drew blood and did a trans-vaginal ultrasound (horrific for me, bc that's how I discovered I had miscarried just a little over a week before). Basically my betas were still elevated and there is still some "stuff" hanging out behind my cervix which could be the reason for the cramping and the bleeding. They gave me methargine to help with the bleeding/cramping and now I have to go back to my OB this afternoon for more blood tests, even though I've been feeling fine since my ER trip. I'm thinking this is somewhat normal following a D&C and everyone is just being extra cautious, but I'm wondering if anyone else has been dealing with these symptoms and if there is reason to be concerned. Thanks.

Re: Severe cramping/bleeding 8 days after D&C?

  • I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I didn't get HEAVY bleeding and cramps (horrible ones by the way) until 6 days after my D&C. And then, at 8 days after my D&C, I had a few more really bad cramps and passed clots. All in all, I bled for 10 days. I hardly had any bleeding and no cramps for the first 3-4 days after the D&C, then the blood picked up a little bit and then on day 6 most of it seemed to come out, the pain was AWFUL. I think everybody's body is different and you are probably fine, but if you want to ease your mind it's always good to follow up with the doctor.

  • I've had 2 d&c's and I bled for pretty much 3 or 4 weeks for the first one. It seemed to be ok, then it got worse (with clots) then it was ok again. There was no tissue leftover, but I did have some cramping and I was swallowing my 800mg Tylenol like they were M&M's.

After the second one, I bled for like a week or so. No clots and the pain was not nearly as bad, but I was still taking the Tylenol.

The leftover stuff could be bad, if your body cannot expel it and it could lead to another d&c.

    Good luck!
