I've seen some other posts on this board from people in similar situations as we are in. We live in an apt with a communal laundry room a couple buildings away. I've read about how to care for cd's and it simply won't work with our facilities. We can't change the water temp. settings on machines, or put a w/d in our unit, so I'm sort of stuck.
People haven't had great things to say about gDiapers - too bad b/c that seemed like the perfect solution - so now what? Am I destined to fill landfills with disposables? Are there other hybrid diapers that get more positive reviews than gDiapers? I'm really disappointed about this
Re: I don't think I can cd, so now what?
living in an apt w/communal laundry does NOT mean that you can't CD. I live in an apt, have to use a building laundry room, and still have fine smelling diapers. definitely better than when I had my own w/d.
laundromats/laundry rooms usually have the water heater turned waaaay up b/c they don't have to worry about the scald factor wince the water just goes to the machine. they aggitate better and spin faster. i have found my CD laundry takes much less time now that i'm in the apt. (1.5 hrs vs 2.5+hr at home). i rinse the poopie ones in the apt. i do a wash and an extra cycle with no soap. bonus: the gym is right next door so i workout while the dipes are in.
yes there is a cost factor. i spend $6/week ($1.50 more if i decide to do the dryer). not a huge issue to me. much better than having to do the disposable route....
I don't think there is such a thing as a disposable diaper being eco friendly (health or environment). But, you do what you have to do.
Don't discount g-diapers - they didn't work for us and I personally don't know anyone that they have worked for. They may do better with newborns than movers/rollers. Maybe they are better for daytime use and a disposable for nighttime.
I would still consider diapering services.
We use the GroBaby system when we're out of the house on weekends and I really like it. We usually use the organic cotton soakers but we also have a box of the biodegradable soakers. I much prefer the cotton soakers and find the biodegradable soakers to be expensive. They're about $0.20 each which is about what a disposable diaper costs. But they do work very well and are easy to use. They might be a good option if you can't do CD laundry. You would still have to wash the shells though.
I think the Flip system also has a disposable insert that is biodegradable. I think the Flip system is supposed to be cheaper than GroBaby.

Thanks for the feedback. I still don't think that I can wash cds here due to the machines - we can't rinse at one temp, wash at another, there's no extra rinse option, etc. They really are lousy machines.
I looked into services, and only found one. It is really expensive. I think we're going to try out gDiapers and the Flip system and see which we like better.
