I called the mom and we talked for nearly an hour.  She knew of the situation b/c her son had told her.  She thanked me for calling and being concerned.  She has already notified the principal, but it doesn't seem like the school is willing to do much about the situation. 

It was nice to catch up, even though my initial reason for calling wasn't pleasant.  I'm so glad that she already knew about the problem though and that he still keeps her in the loop.

You did the right thing.  I'm glad she knew about it, but amazed that the school isn't willing to get involved at all.
