Help with paci's

My LO does not like paci's.  In the hospital she took a Soothie.  Now, nothing enters her mouth except my boobies.

I have tried Soothies, MAM, NUK.  Any suggestions?

She is only 12 days old.  Should I worry about her using my nips for comfort at this point?  I can't deny her.  She's so cute!

Re: Help with paci's

  • DS1 never took a paci, or a bottle for that matter, I definitely tried every shape and size. DS2 will take anything, I think it just depends on the baby.

    Effing crazy people.

  • We have the same thing going.  If hubby works at it he can get her to use a paci with supervision (ie his finger keeping it there) but really it's just my boobies or bust for her Smile

You'll have to decide for yourself if you are okay being her only solace.  I'm okay with it and my little girl isn't a huge soothe sucker.  She sucks her fingers when she wants to self soothe.  Some babies, I have heard, are big time soothe suckers.  Like they will suck for an hour on the boob and not even be eating.  That wouldn't be okay with me - owie.

  • Ds loves the avent paci's but hates everything else.

  • I am going to get an Avent tomorrow.  If that doesn't work, I guess I am just SOL.

    Thanks late night ladies!

  • I think the Tommy Tippee brand makes pacifiers. I'm pretty sure we have a few. They are supposed to mimic the nipple really well. My kid is strictly bottle fed, so he doesn't know the difference anyway, but it might be worth looking into.

  • For our son we have to lightly tap the paci for a little while before he will take it. He won't suck on the paci at all if he doesn't already have the urge to suck. Try offering the paci at different times, maybe you are offering it when your baby just doesn't feel the urge.

'Big fan of tommee tippee here. we use both the bottles and paci.  DS started taking pacis with no struggle about a week ago.
  • DD never took a paci and I pretty much went through every kind on the market.  Eventually she learned to self-soothe by sucking on her hands and fingers.

I'm actually happy about it now since it is one less thing to try and wean her of later.

  • Another vote for the Avent.  LO was all about the Soothie, but it would never stay in his mouth for longer than a minute.  We just started using the Avent paci yesterday and it's made a world of difference.  It could be a complete coincidence, but he sleep for 6 hours last night for the first time...it was heaven!
  • I can't really help - the only pacis DD will take are Soothies.
  • the only ones my lo likes are the Born Free pacis- and like the PP said, if you tap it for a min. or two until they get good suction it might help.
