question: Saline Drops for congestion

The bottle says 2-6 drops. That part I understand. But, when you do it do you leave LO's head tipped back for a few minutes to let the saline work its way up? And how soon after you do the drops do you suction her nose? It seems to me that when I use nose spray I have to wait 30 minutes before blowing my nose. (I think that sounds abut right...I could be wrong.) I'm afraid that if I suction her nose right away I'll be sucking the saline out instead of the mucus.

What do you do?

Re: question: Saline Drops for congestion

  • I kinda just put a few drops by his nostrils and then used the bulb to get the snot out....wasnt sure like you how far to tip his head back because it could go back into his throat.  I personally hate when nasal spray does that!! good luck!

  • Maybe I am doing it wrong... I do it when she is laying on the changing table. I just put the saline up there and spray and then suck it out. Two weeks ago when she was sick, she spit up a bunch of mucus, so maybe it went down her throat...yuck.

  • I just spray one "squirt" into each nostril, then go right behind it with the bulb sucker thingy and pull all the goop out.  I've noticed a big difference in LO's breathing since I started this on Thursday.  She's also getting nebulizer breathing treatments every 4 hours, and that's how often I do the nose drops and bulb sucker as well.  Dr said not to do it more often than that b/c it could hurt/irritate her nostrils.   Good luck!!!!

  • I'm personally not a huge fan of these.  My DS just basically chokes when I squirt them up his nose.  I'm much more of a fan of the old fashion suctioner and Qtips for the extra snot!  I only use the Saline Drops if his nasal passages are really dry...hth!
