Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone Else with Pets... (TMI)...

Just disgusted with them since having the baby?  We have two cats and one of them, about two months before the baby came, has stopped cleaning his ass.  He leaves the litter box with huge dingle berries which crust over.  I refuse to touch it because I'm breastfeeding and don't want to somehow get potential bacteria to little one. I ask DH to clean it so he has to literally wipe the cats ass with a warm wash cloth.  But, the second the cat takes another ***, the problem starts all over again.

The cats run into the nursery (though we keep the door closed, all the time), any chance they get.  When I walk in there, as I reach behind to close the door, they run in.  I yell at them to get out and they run underneath the crib into the back so I can't get them.

They jump up onto the kitchen counters, with their shitty asses, and though they dont do it when I'm in the room because I immediately spray them with a water bottle, they do it every night while we're sleeping.  I know because the blinds are askew when I get up in the morning, in the window above the sink.

I dust EVERY day and there is still cat hair everywhere.  I've lost any pleasure I take in having the cats and just want them gone.  DH says we can get rid of them but I know he'd be upset and I don't know why I'm so rage-filled towards them?  Anyone else experiencing anything similar or am I just kind of a b*tch? :)

  • hee hee sorry had to laugh at the dingle berries!  I'm not disgusted with our lab...just more annoyed with him....which is something I said I would never be while pregnant.  But his hair and him always wanting on the couch gets old.  I do feel bad that he doesn't get as much attention anymore:(

  • For the fur problem, you could try using the Furminator on your cats once a week.  It has done wonders for keeping cat fur off my furniture.  I have 3 cats.

I couldn't imagine getting rid of my cats.  You should ask your vet about why your cat isn't being cleanly anymore.  There could be an underlying issue there.

My cats get on the counters, too, and I just make sure to wipe them down with baby safe cleaner (I use Mrs. Meyers Baby Blossom Countertop Spray) prior to the preparation of any food or bottles.

I think some weird feeling of being overprotective towards non-threatening sources happens to women after birth.  I had it, but in my case it was towards my MIL and not my cats... lol

Please take some measures to try to remedy your problems with the cats before getting rid of them, and if you do decide to rehome them, please make sure you do it responsibly.

  • Um, yeah.  I am embarrassed to say that I am very annoyed and disgusted with both my cat and dog now.  The cat wants to sleep in all of DS's things - the swing, bouncer, car seat - everything has hair on it and it's so annoying.  She cries at my feet everytime I am making bottles - the greedy little cat wants my breast milk... LOL.

I love my pets - but you are not alone... LOL

  • I'm with ya. I wouldn't go as far as saying I hate my cats but I am so annoyed with them right now I scream at them all the time. The worst part is when they somehow get into our room or the nursery and they jump right on the crib or bassinet. That makes my blood boil! But I do feel bad they are not getting a lot of attention anymore Sad

  • I am not as fed up as you, but my dog can get annoying.  She is sooo gross, she always wants my milk too, if I am pumping and leave the bottles on the floor for just a second, she is licking the cones.  She also loves spit up...which is disgusting, but kinda nice, as when DS spits up on the carpet, she licks it up Stick out tongue.  She would even lick his face to get the spit up off if I let her! If I don't put the garbage can up, she will eat diapers and wipes too, she really is gross!  The other annoying thing is she always tries to get DS's toys...she loves plastic and stuffed animals as much as paper...we have one of those things that clip onto clothing and holds a pacifier, and if DS has the pacifier hanging while on the floor, she will try to get that also, so I can never leave them alone together, not that I would do that anyway. Otherwise she is pretty indifferent to him, she doesn't mind him, but is far from protective or clingy...I really don't think she cares if he is around or not!
  • Yes, our cat is driving me crazy. He's adorable and I love him but he wants to sleep in all the baby stuff- swing, bouncer, PNP, crib, stroller...you name it, he loves it.

He also likes to jump up and snuggle against the baby when I'm nursing. I feel bad because I'm always pushing him away or chasing him out of stuff.

  • My dog decided she was going to start eating her poop when we brought DS home. Nasty dog.
  • Soooo glad it's not just me!

  • They just want your attention.

Cats are much smarter than people give them credit for. I've made a point to keep doting on my girls nsince DS arrived and there hasn't been any bad behaviour. Of course, I make a point to wash my hands afterwards, and I keep bottles of hand sanitizer downstairs so I don't always have to run upstairs to wash.

Have you taken them to the vet? They might have an actual problem that can be easily cleared up.
