If you have major swelling during pregnancy....

...like massive swelling but it's nothing more than water retention, no medical issues, can you take a diuretic?  I don't know anything about this stuff and it never occurred to me before to ask about it.

SIL is holding soooooo muuuuuuch water and is miserably uncomfortable and it's somewhat painful.  Especially her hands she says.  She says her dh keeps saying there has to be something that can be done.  Obviously there isn't.  I would imagine that if she could take a diuretic, all pregnant chicks would.  I don't know anything else about diuretics other than they make you pee.  Don't know any other effects.

Re: If you have major swelling during pregnancy....

  • I had it, but just in one leg (left).  They told me compression hose/stockings (which are a b!tch when 26+wks pg with twins) and to keep my legs up.  She would not prescribe a diuretic because my BP, which is normally low (like 105/65, even pg).  At my 6 wk check up, they did a doppler to check for a clot and it was clear....then gave me a diuretic, but I could only take 1/2 pill every 2nd day.  I still (nearly 6 mos later) have some swelling in that leg if I'm up all day long.
  • It is my understanding that diuretics are very dangerous to the baby.  I had major swelling with my first pregnancy (due to pre-e) and I had to live with until delivery.  By major, I'm talking about gaining over 40 lbs in water weight over a 3 week period.

  • I would imagine they are unsafe. They can affect your BP and your electrolytes.

I gained 27 lbs of water weight in 3 weeks- mostly in my legs. I was told to drink water and Gatorade like there was no tomorrow, avoid any food with sodium/ salt, and to keep my feet up as much as I could.

My BP was high and erratic and I was borderline Pre-E.

The swelling is definitely bad, but nothing was going to help mine.  I had severe pre-e, and my kidneys almost completely shut down.  I was told to drink water, and I did, but I also wasn't peeing much.  Everything I drank just stayed.  Usually, the common-sense measures work, but I had some unusally bad stuff going on.  I wasn't borderline for pre-e, I had the most severe form which I nearly died from.

ETA: Drinking lots of water, rest, and limited sodium would likely be helpful to the OP.

  • I had a lot of swelling.  They induced me a week early because of it.  Thought I was toxic.
