Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How easy is it for babies to catch a cold?

We are supposed to go over to a friend's house for dinner tonight.  She texted that her 1.5 yr old has a slight cough.  Her DS is always sick it seems like from daycare...something I worry about when my DS starts going:(

Anyways, he won't be touching my LO and will be in bed an hour after we get there.  Can DS get sick from it just being in the air?  Should we not go anymore or am I being too paranoid?

  • I was always told that BF (if you are) provides a lot of antibodies since the mom's body makes them for whatever she's currently being exposed to.

DH has had bronchitis since DS4's birth, I've had a bad cold, and DS2 was home from school sick one day.  DS4 currently has a mildly stuffy nose and is acting a bit irritable, but hasn't been very sick -- hopefully that will continue.

  • maybe i am a little more cautious, but DD didn't go out at all for the first 2 months as per the dr's orders.  especially anywhere that there was a confirmed sick child!  everyone has their own opinion on this but just remember--it is going to be YOU that will have to deal with a sick baby if he catches something and to me the dinner out wouldn't be worth it.  but you do what is comfortable for you and your LO.

  • My DS had a cold. He was congested and had a cough when he was 7.5 weeks old. He wasn't even around anyone we knew who had a cold. I was worried but my DS's pedi. wasn't. I wouldn't take my DS around someone who had a cold but if you must go then I would keep her away from your LO.
  • I am a little more cautious too.  DS has yet to leave the house exept for a pediatrian's appointment.  I would not expose him to a sick child even if the child will not be touching LO - the common cold is resperatory and is in the air if the boy coughs or sneezes.

    Good luck.

  • DD's sitter has 3 kids of her own and two of them have been sick for the last two weeks. The sitter keeps them away from. DD and she has not gotten sick yet.

  • I wouldn't go.  DD got a cold when she was 6.5 weeks old and it wasn't fun at all.  She was so congested and couldn't sleep for days so we just sat in the glider all night because it was easier for her to be upright.  It was so sad seeing her try to breathe and not being able to.  I will not take her around anyone who is confirmed sick.
