So we originally had no plan of boarding our furbaby, my parents are planning on coming out once I go into labor so we figured they could walk and feed her. Unfortunately she had to have surgery this week and we will have to be very careful when we bring her home. Our biggest concern is her falling down and re-injuring herself. My father is capable of walking her when she is ok, but I do not think he will be able to be extra careful with her. My husband said he can always drive back and forth from the hospital (30 minutes each way), but who know how long I will be in labor for. Our vet said if we want they will emergency board her for us given our circumstances. My concern with boarding her is I was hoping to bring our dog a blanket from the hospital and I also do not want to bring the baby home and then bring the dog home after. I am figuring we would probably only be able to pick up our doggy once we have gotten the baby into the house. I cannot believe this all happened and I only have 3 more weeks to go. Did anyone board their pet while at the hospital? If so was it hard bringing the pet home and getting it adjusted afterwards?
Re: Anyone board their furbaby while giving birth?
You seem to have some special circumstances here but what we did was just leave the dog at home and DH went back and forth to tend to him. He was sad and had some accidents, but it really went fine.
We live about 25 mins from the hospital too, but I really didn't need DH around after I gave birth. I mean I wanted him there but didn't care if he went home for a few hours to spend with the dog or take things we no longer needed back.
I was resting and had visitors so it wasn't a big deal. Our last night there he even slept at home with the dog while i stayed in the hospital with DD by myself. It was kind of fun!
While you are in labor maybe have your family tend to the dog. and then afterwards DH or a family member can rotate duties. You'll only be there for 2 or 3 days (depending if you have a c/s)?
We boarded our lab, Roxy, when we had DD1. Roxy is diabetic and needs insulin twice a day at roughly the same times. At the time DD1 was born Roxy was only a year old and still was getting into a routine and set dose. We didn't want to burden family or have to worry about her and we wanted DH to be able to stay with me and not have to worry about being home for her meal and dose times.
When we had DD2 we already knew he wouldn't spend the night and DH's parents agreed to go over and feed/dose her.
With DS DH's parents came out to stay with us and took care of Roxy.
That first time bringing Roxy home was totally fine. She was curious about the baby but very nice and gentle with her.
