Any workout gurus want to help me get started?

It appears I have finally reached the age where I can no longer eat whatever I want with no consequences.  =(  I've been putting it off, but really need to get started with some type of beginning workout.  Any suggestions for starting out at a beginner level?  I want something I can do at home.  I have a treadmill that I could dust off, but have been wondering about a video of some sort, or maybe a combination of the 2.  Goal would be to lose 8-10 lbs and tone up the hips/butt/upper thigh area.

  • I just finished the Jillian Michaels 30 days shred (well I finished it in the middle of Feb) and I loved it. I did each level for 10 days (I did change my diet though too) and lost 11lbs while doing it. I didn't follow her diet that goes along with it though- I just make healthier food choices with portion control- I try to keep my intake between 1000-1200 calories a day.

  • I'd say do the 30DS, plus the treadmill.  Also, cut out the carbs.  Once you feel more comfortable with working out, try P90X videos.  Those are killer.

  • Ditto the P90X videos. I am on day 12 of them now. I was pretty sure the first 7 days that I might die.

Makes 30 day shred look like a walk in the park.

They sure do, don't they?!  I've been doing CrossFit for a few months now, and P90X is a pretty close second to that.  I've also heard good/crazy things about the Insanity videos by BeachBody.

Yep, I have heard the same things about insanity. I might have to do that next. I get bored SO easily. I will have to change things up a bit. So tell me about this Cross Fit... what does it entail?

In the four months I've been doing CF, no workout has ever been the same.  Look up some workouts on YouTube.  They're INSANE.  It's supposed to be functional moves executed at a higher pace to get the cardio in there too.  Nothing in my life has been harder, and I've been working out since I was 15.  I've done every class there ever was, and nothing has touched CrossFit.

  • Butting in...CrossFit IS insane!  I'm doing P90X right now because we wanted to try something new but I'm not seeing the results like I did when I was doing CrossFit.  We will definitely go back to that.

You do it too?!  I LOVE IT.  I mean, I'm totally addicted to it.  I can't see myself ever going away from it.

I did love it...I mean I loved the results.  I don't know why we stopped doing it - big mistake on our part!  We are halfway through p90x but MH broke his hand on Saturday so we are going to have to modify that...not sure when we'll get back to CrossFit now but we have to.  It is the only way we both lose weight!

    Oooo-sorry about his hand!

I hear ya though.  This way of working out has been the only way that I have gained muscle and lost fat.  And I love doing it.  I went into it not knowing anyone who'd done it.  I'm so glad I took the chance on it.  I just did "Angie" on Wednesday and I'm still sore!

  • Do you do CrossFit every day like you do P90X?

I do it 3 days a week, but my trainers do it daily.  I can't afford daily!

  • Just looked up Angie...wow...I do not remember that!  Are you doing it by yourself?  If so, you rock.  I need a partner at all times...otherwise I start getting lazy.

I do it in a local garage with 3 trainers.  I don't have the equipment in my garage to do it here.  I adore my trainers.  Two gals and one guy.  So much fun to workout with them.
