Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Blighted ovum but HCG levels still rising?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this?  I went in for an ultrasound at 10 weeks PG and the u/s tech only saw a gestational sac/no embryo, and I was only measuring 5 weeks.  I had blood drawn twice over a 48 hour period that week to check my HCG levels, and they rose, but not by much - from 5000 to 5800.  Another ultrasound at 11 weeks confirmed the same thing - no fetal pole, only a gestational sac.  They drew blood again yesterday, and my levels have gone up to 7500 (low, and not doubling like they should -  but still rising).

 My OB is 99% sure this is a blighted ovum, but wants my HCG levels taken again on Monday.  I'm guessing she's just being absolutely sure this is a miscarriage - but this all still seems weird.

 Any similar experiences?

 Thanks so much for your help -

Katie

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I had the same thing, blighted ovum with rising HCG levels.

  • In my searches I came across this website.  There are a lot of different stories on here maybe you can find something similar.  {{hugs}}

  • My experience was very similar. I had an ultrasound at 8.5 weeks that showed a sac and yolk sac but no fetal pole. I had two hcg draws 48 hrs. apart.  My hcg rose from 56,000 to 61,000, an increase but not doubling.  My OB said he was 99% sure I had a blighted ovum but did a follow-up ultrasound a week later to confirm.  At the follow-up, he said he was positive it was a blighted ovum and gave me three options with how to deal with it.  I chose to let the miscarriage happen naturally because I couldn't stand to "end" it myself.  It took me 3 weeks to finally miscarry.  The wait is so very hard.  I'm very sorry that you are going through this.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.
  • Thank you all so very much for your help - this is so comforting to know that others have had similar experiences (though I don't want anyone to lose a pregnancy and send my sympathy to you all as well).  I really appreciate the help.  I'm super sad - but feel lucky to have healthy 2.5 year old twin girls.  Hopefully we can try again in a few months.

    Thanks :)

  • Rising but non-doubling levels are normal with a blighted ovum.

    I'm surprised they're still running betas on you.

    My OB stops betas once they can confirm something present in the uterus and then use u/s to measure growth and determine viability.

    I hope you get some answers and peace soon.

  • Never posted on this board, but wanted to let you know this happened to me (today in fact). I went for my 1st appointment; had ultrasound (I should be 10 weeks today) and there is a big sac with nothing at all inside.  My hcg's were checked several times earlier in pregnancy and got as high as 65,000. They are not checking them now, but she said it was common for the hcg to rise in blighted ovum. (I am having D &C this week by the way).

    SO sorry you're dealing with this.  Today has been a horrible day for me! I'm a complete mess.
