Severe Diaper Rash Treatment?

Hayden has had diarrea (sp?) really bad today and so in turn he has a pretty severe diaper rash on his bottom. So bad that it was even bleeding a little bit. I have tried regular desitin but it doesn't work. I bought some Maximum Strength Desitin but I have only used it a couple of times. Is there anything that will work better to clear it up? Poor baby was crying when DH changed his diaper before bed because it hurt.

  • Happy Hiney

    Equal parts:

    Desitin
    Hydrocortisone cream
    Anti-fungal cream (e.g. Lotrimin)
    Splash of Maalox

My pedi gave me this recipe and it works like a charm.

  • If there is diarrhea there will likely end up being some yeast component to the rash.  See if you can get some Nystatin from your ped.  I also really like triple paste.  Put the nystatin on first. fan dry and cover with triple paste.
  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I love the Happy Heiny recipe and will give it a try.

Thanks irishdo, I will call the pedi tomorrow and see about getting some nystatin.

  • Nolan just had one that left his behind looking like raw meat. We switched between a nystatin mixture (RX) neosporen, and a&D.

Do NOT put on anything that takes effort to wipe off. Desitin, or thick creams were bad news!

Where the heck do you find the last 3 ingredients from? Walgreens? Isn't Maalox used for upset stomach? Sorry for bombarding you with questions but my son got his first diaper rash today and I'm curious about the recipe too.

  • H had a yeast infection and we got the Rx for nystatin from our pedi and it worked like a charm.  We also gave her lots of naked baby time - but I imagine that becomes more difficult as babies become mobile.

  • we do maloxx and vasoline or aquaphor as recommended by our pedi.  The maloxx is an ant-acid so it neutralizes the urine to stop the burn and the vasoline seals it in and keeps friction from making the rash worse

  • For us - there is no substitute for Triple Paste - it is awesome.  For rashes that may also be fungal - prescription nystatin or Lotrimin applied first - then Triple Paste frosted over the top.  Plus - no wipes - use warm water on a soft wash cloth to wipe off poo - and LOTS of naked butt time, naked butt naps, etc. - no diaper = no diaper rash.  Good luck!

Thanks Lucy!! Great ideas that I will use for sure. We have about 50 wash clothes so that should help better than those drying wipes. I will do some extra naked time tomorrow and give naked nap time a try. I Hope it helps, I hate to think of his bottom being so sore.

  • Bag Balm always works really well for us.  Good luck!

  • We always use washcloths and water - the baby nurse at the pediatrician said that in the hospital they often used cotton balls and water, so that could help too.  For a bad rash, I often squirted her over the toilet with a peri bottle.

  • ditto the washcloth with warm water instead of wipes.  our pedi told us to use a hair dryer (if you have one that has a warm as opposed to hot setting) to dry her off before putting the triple paste on it.  she absolutely loves the hair dryer, it's hysterical!
