Question about pacifiers

We use one for our LO when she is in her cot.

We have two that we rotate around and they have a little cap you can put on them to keep them clean when not in use.

My question is, how often should I be sterilising them?

I mean if she uses one for her morning nap do I have to sterilise it before I use it again? Or is it ok to just pop its cap on.

I was just thinking about the bacteria that could grow while the paci sits around for a few hours.

Any thoughts?

Re: Question about pacifiers

  • yikes I'm a bad mom then.  I leave DS's sitting out in between uses and only wash once or twice a day.  If it falls on the floor or something I wash it in hot soapy water.

  • I'm pretty relaxed when it comes to cleaning the pacifiers. I'll try to wash ours every couple days with soap and water unless they fall on the floor- when I rinse them off thoroughly.
  • Oh I haven't been sterilising between each use, it just suddenly occurred to me that maybe I should be sterilising more often than I do.

This. Except I put mine in the dishwasher with the bottles. She has two, so we alternate - even though she hates them...I keep trying, lol

  • I only sterilize DD's things once or twice a week. On a side note, we have a set of paci's like you describe and the cap is actually ment to be used to sterilize. You just put water in it and put it in the micro.

    Same here.
  • I wash/sterilize every night. The back of the Nuk pacis says just wash every night in hot soapy water and that you don't need to sterilize, but I do it anyway. If they hit the floor I wash them. I also found some great Pacifier Wipes that I take out with me incase it falls while we're out and about. They clean but are made of food grade ingredients so you can just give it right back.

  • We keep a baggy with freshly sanitized pacifiers. ?As they fall out on the floor, land on the changing table, etc, we switch them out and wash and sterilize them.
