Trying to Get Pregnant

WWTTGPD?

OK, so I got a UTI a few days ago. After taking 3 of the 14 pills that my doctor prescribed, I feel fine. I kinda want to save the rest of them for the next time I get a UTI. But I've also heard that if you don't take all your medicine you could become immune to it. WWYD? This is what's on the label: Nitrofurantoin Mono-MCR (substitute for Macrobid).

Re: WWTTGPD?

  • I would finish.  I've had tons of UTIs in the past and you start feeling better as soon as you take the pills, but if you don't finish the few bugs that weren't killed right away might be able to make it and then continue to multiply.  If this is something you get often, I would ask the doc for a standing prescription.  This is what I had to do a few years ago when I got them constantly.

  • Finish taking the pills!! I've had many UTI's in my life and it comes down to this, just because you feel better doesn't mean the infection is gone.  If you stop taking the pills soon you will start to feel bad again and if you remember that pain you won't want that.

  • Take them all!  If it comes back it will be harder to treat.  And that's no fun.  Glad you're feeling better.
  • I would take it according to what the doc prescribed. I think the problem with not finishing the prescription is that while you think you are better, it may not have nabbed all the infection, so it's best to take it the entire length of the prescription to make sure the infection is gone.

Edit: If you're worried about UTI's in the future, consider taking cranberry pills, they are good for preventing UTI's. (Drinking cranberry juice works too)

  • I get UTIs frequently and this happened to me recently.  I took 4 days worth and saved the rest....but in reality you should try to take them all and ask your doctor for an emergency refill.  You can also take 1 as a prophylactic before sex.  I think this would be crazy to keep taking pills throughout the month.  My friend did this when she was in a long distance relationship, but once you're married it seems like you would be taking pills too frequently.  I don't think 3/14 pills is quite enough.  Plus are you taking the orange pills that decrease your symptoms?  This may be masking whether or not you really feel fine.  You should keep those pills on hand too.
  • If it's an antibiotic def. finish it!

  • Definitely finish - I've stopped taking the pills before for the same reason and it just comes back.  There's a reason he wants you to take all of them.  The first few days are just getting rid of the symptoms... then rest of the pills are killing the infection.
  • Take them all! Just because you're feeling better, doesn't mean the infection is gone. Usually, you start feeling better pretty quick but the infection is still there. If you stop taking them, it becomes resistant and harder to treat when it comes back.

This.  Take them all, you'll be glad you did.

Listen to your doctor.  WTF?  Save them?  If you get another infection, get more pills.

Exactly.  If you don't finish them, you may very well get it back.

This. Take them all. If you don't, it defeats the purpose.

  • Finish the antibiotics....if you stop them the infection will come back and you could wind up with a kidney infection.  They are hard to treat and can cause longterm damage...
  • Agree with PPs--take all the pills!

  • Please take them!! If you don't, the UTI could come back and Macrobid won't do a darn thing for it, and you will have to get a new, stronger, more expensive antibiotic to treat it.
  • Hi Jiffy, definately take the pills. You don't want the infection to worsen and reach your kidneys. Feel better soon!

  • Definitely take all the pills you're supposed to.  You don't want to risk it coming back just to save a few bucks because you feel good now.

  • I can't stress this enough:  TAKE ALL OF YOUR ANTIBIOTICS.

Whatever it doesn't kill now can get stronger, requiring more potent antibiotics until there are no more potent antibiotics.

  • Finish taking all the pills.

    Finish taking all the pills.

Finish taking all of the pills.

Oh, did I say...Finish taking all of the pills?

Seriously, I am speaking from experience...you don't want to risk not having gotten rid of it completely.
