Preemies

How much did your baby weigh at 36 weeks?

I'm having a c-section at 36 1/2 weeks, and I'm trying to figure out how much the baby will weigh by then. Should I buy a few preemie outfits to have on hand?

Re: How much did your baby weigh at 36 weeks?

  • Simon was discharged from the NICU at 36 weeks and was 5lbs. 7oz.  He did wear preemie clothes until he was about 6-7lbs, depending on the brand of clothing.  I would recommend skipping the preemie garb and getting more newborn size.  Babies grown pretty quickly.
  • DD was born at 34w2d and was discharged from the NICU at 37w4d.  She had a couple of preemie outfits that fit for a couple of post-NICU weeks, but she also had NB sizes that were just a bit big.  As pp said, I'd get a couple of extra NB outfits, particularly ones that don't have the footies so you can roll up the pant legs (and sleeves) if need be.  GL!

  • I had an enormous 8lber at 36 week.  He was the chunk of the NICU.  This time they think I am having at least a 9lber if not 10 if I go to term.  DS 1 never wore preemie clothes obviously and really only fit in newborn for a few weeks.  With this baby I have only bought 1 new outfit but I bought 0-3 months and do not even plan on buying any newborn size as it usually goes up to 8lbs depending on brand.
  • We brought him home at 36 weeks and he was a little under 5 lbs. He still wore preemie size clothes for another month or so (it mattered more for sleepers and pants...onesies can be big)
  • I wouldn't worry about buying any preemie clothes. Even my 31 weeker seemed to grow out of his preemie stuff really quickly. You shoud be fine with newborn size. When it comes to clothing and babies it's better too big than too small! :)
  • My DD was born at 35 weeks 2 days and was 6lb 2oz and didnt need preemie clothes, NB clothes were a little big for a short time. Like others said babies grow very fast :)

  • I had DS at 36 weeks and he was 8lbs 4oz.  They looked at me like I had made a wrong turn when we had to go to the NICU for testing.  They kept checking my chart to see if I had GD, nope, just an enormous child.
  • I believe DD was around 6lbs. I may be wrong though. I'll have to go back and look at my calendar.

  • DS was 6lb7oz at 36wk1d when he was born (I also had GD). he had a few preemie outfits that he wore for the first month or so. he was long and skinny.
  • I had DD at 36w3d and she was 7 lb 6.9 oz! I would definitely skip the preemie and buy newborn. DD wore newborn for about 2 weeks tops which shocked me, but then again she is only 7 months old right now and is wearing 12-18 months.....which is the same size her big brother is wearing at 2 yo.

All babies are different and if this is your first (I didn't notice your siggy) first babies tend to be on the smaller side, but if this is your second I would not buy preemie.
