Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What vegetable do you recommend that I start with first?

The pedi. gave us the go ahead on fruits and vegetables and I am going to start this weekend with a vegetable.

Also, my sister said that when she started giving her DS solids, she would mix the vegetable or fruit with the cereal to start him off. To let him get used to the taste. What do you think of this? Stupid or good idea? It seems kind of pointless but I don't know.

  • We started with sweet potatoes.  I didn't mix his veggies with cereal.  DS didn't really care for cereal though.  He loves oatmeal!  So he gets oatmeal mixed with 2oz of fruit puree for breakfast.  But other than that, he gets straight veggies & fruits. We're moving onto more finger foods now, but I still try to get some purees down him first!

    Good luck!  It's super fun!

  • DS's favorite is Sweet Potatoes... so I wouldn't start with that - you want him to eat other things too!  If I could go back, I'd start with Peas and/or Green Beans... we have the hardest time with all things green :(
  • Sweet potatoes or squash are always big winners with AJ.  He isn't crazy about the greens so I mix them in with the oranges once all of his allergy tests are done.
  • It's a fruit but....we started with avocado. It's super easy for LO and you, because all you have to do is scoop it out and mash it with a fork. No heating or pureeing required. She was iffy at first, but now she adores it.

we only did this w/ puree's... not the actual whole veggie or fruit.

  • We started with green beans- she loved them, not mixed with anything. She has like every veggie but hasn't cared for sweet potato( but in fairness she was getting over a cold so that might have something to do with it.

  • We started with sweet potato mixed with breast milk. He loved it!!
  • we were advised to do the gross ones first (first beans, then peas, then carrots, squash, and last sweet potatoes)  My girls love peas though, its their favorite!
  • we started with sweet potato.

our pedi said NOT to mix. that way the baby learns that different foods have different tastes and textures.

  • We started with carrots but sweet potatos are his favorite veggie.  I make my baby food so it's a little runny so I do mix rice cereal with the veggie.

  • We started with squash and at first he didn't like it alone, he took it better mixed with oatmeal.
