What clothes to bring for L&D?

Just wondering what you girls were going to/have packed for labor and delivery.  Everything I've read says bring something comfy that you won't care if it gets ruined.  Are we talking nightgowns?  Sweapants?  Something with easy access to the "girls" for BF'ing?

  • Do you mean the actual delivery, for post partum?  I plan on wearing the hospital gown for the delivery, don't exactly want my own stuff to get ruined... for the time afterwards, I may stay in the gown (since I hear its still pretty messy) or I may get a nursing nightgown.  I'm not much of a nightgown person, but in case I have a c-section, I'd rather not have something binding around my waist.

  • you dont need to bring anything special--why bring something that you'll get ruined/have to wash;  the hospital gowns are fine--and after the birth you'll be checked for bleeding often so sweats arent that convenient.  As for BFing, the gowns are perfect.  You wont be in the hosp for a week so for a day or 2 hosp gowns are just fine.  A bathrobe is helpful

  • For L&D, you'll be in a hospital gown.  I wouldn't bother packing anything specific.

After delivery, you'll be given lovely mesh undies.  I wore DH's sweatpants and a nursing tank from Target.  When they needed to check me, I just pulled down my pants.  No big deal.

  • I wore nothing but nursing tanks and hospital gowns the whole time. Everything else is a waste of space. You won't care.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • for l&D wear the gowns they give you. And ask for a fresh one whenever you want...it makes it much more pleasant.

For after, I wore nursing tanks and loose pj pants over the lovely mesh undies

  • Trust me....wear the hospital gown. I brought a robe to throw over the gown for when we had guests and that was just fine.

  • I always packed cute pj pants for after the delivery that I had gotten pretty cheap at target and some comfy tshirts.  (I had 2 csections...so I was in the hospital a little longer)

This time I think I am going to go with some yoga pants, probably the cropped ones and either tanks or tshirts again...

Dont forget to pack your flipflops for the shower!!!

this. plus maybe a lightweight bathrobe.

After the delivery they checked my bottom to see how much I was bleeding, swollen and the 'roids. It is lovely, and pants would have made that process more difficult.

I also had a pair of non-absorbent flip flops. I did a lot of walking after my water was broken...they were out of maternity pads and the regular maxis did not do the job. I was glad to have shoes that did not get wet.  In the postpartum ward/nicu it was nice to be able to get around the hospital with something on my feet but not have to put on real shoes.

  • I liked to bring something comfy and cute for after delivery because I had lots of visitors.  Usually just a long nightgown or pants and a nursing top.  Bring a robe, you will want it when your husbands friends or someone you are not that close with visits.  Bring socks and flip flops for the shower.  Also pack what you will want to wear home from the hospital.  I did loose yoga pants and a tank and flip flops....
