need newborn sitting/laying area ideas

Hi- we have a small house and I am trying to figure out what would be the best option of where to put our newborn babies while we are in the living room, as we can't hold them every minute of the day.

I wanted to get a twin pack n play but its so expensive and it seems to have a lot of bad reviews.  2 regular pack n plays would take up so much room. I feel bad having them sit in their carseats.

Anyone have any suggestions? I do have a dog and cats so I don't want to lay them on the floor either.

Wondering what others do. Thanks!

  • we also have a pretty small house, but no pets.  we put ours in a bouncy, or small (travel) swing, but mostly on a blanket on the floor.  you could put them on a blanket on the floor and surround them with a fence around them.  or just get a single pack n play.  they are going to fit fine in it, and when they are older you will probably need to have a pack n play anyway.  you may need to nap them in separate rooms, or need two pack n plays for travel, etc.

we have a regular pack n play and also have a larger graco that is 38x38 - kind of old school kind.

  • I do the same thing as PP- bouncy and a swing and floortime.  Your babies will need time on the floor to develop their skills anyways so a gate would probably work around them.
  • Loading the player...
  • They will need time on the floor to build up muscles and learn to roll etc.  We have pets too and just plan to gate the dogs in the kitchen when the babies are on the floor and I can't see my cats getting near the babies.

  • try getting two boppy newborn pillows they are like clouds!
  • My only concern with the pack n play is if I end up getting a c section, won't it hurt to bend over to put them in it?

  • We have a dog, and your pets will get use to them.  You also need to teach your pets to leave the babies alone.  Our dog will sniff them or lay right by them, but learned he has to leave them alone, unless I'm right there.  We used the bouncy seats, swings and play mats.  I did have one of the pack n play's set up too.  But we didn't use it much.  For a short time we had a pack n play and co-sleeper set up in our living room.  We have a small house too, and you barely could walk because of it!  We also put them in the boppy's on the couch, when we were right there, I did put it on the floor too.
  • We had bouncy seats that we kept up off the floor for the first two months.  The twins loved them and spent alot of time there.   They now use them on the floor and we have worked with the dog to keep away from them.

They spend alot of time on their activity mat these days.  I usually have them play on it in their room since I can shut out the dog.  I use it in the living room also but when I am around to watch them and the dog.

  • Thanks for your responses. I am not concerned about the pets bothering them, I just dont want to get pet hair on the babies and their things. We can only vacuum so much.

This, my twins spent tons of time on these pillows they loved them and now they love to lay on them like bean bags.

sure it'll hurt to pick them up whether they're in their crib, or in a pack n play, or in a bouncy on the floor, etc.  you have to be careful not to lift anything heavier than baby.  so, you are not allowed to vaccuum ;)  someone else has to do it.

also, when they were really little i would put a bouncy on our coffee table.  before they were even trying to roll, and ONLY when i was right there.  i have heard stories of babies having falls when they get mobile.

we washed the quilt they layed on pretty often, so you might just have to wash it every day if you are dealing with pets that shed alot.
