Correlation b/wn naps and night sleep?

So my LO got in two good naps yesterday (this never, ever happens) and he slept a lot better at night - he usually fusses a bit every hour or so and wakes up more - but this time he slept straight from 8 until 2:30.  Do you all think it was his naps affecting his night sleep or is it maybe his developmental milestones affecting both his naps and night sleep (making him more tired and a better sleeper in general).

  • It's hard to say and probably a little of both though I am a firm believer that good daytime sleep does help nighttime sleep.  Either way I hope it continues for you!

  • We have found that good naps mean a good night!!!

When she is an awful napper we know that night will be restless and filled with getting up to an unhappy baby.  I really do spend a good part of my day working on her napping since she is an awful napper.

  • Elizabeth Pantley says in the No Cry Sleep Solution that this is true.  however, we have (finally) started consistent naps for a little over a week and I haven't seen improvement at night yet.  I am *hopeful* that if we continue being diligent with our naps we will see marked improvement at night soon.  I want to believe its true, but I haven't witnessed it myself (yet).
  • Today will be day 2 of this new schedule so I guess I'll see if there is a pattern tonight.  I decided to put him down earlier than I had been (before I really saw any cues but I think I was maybe feeding him when he got fussy instead of seeing it as a tired cue).  I actually feel bad because sometimes he just naps for an hour total a day but yesterday he took a 2.5 hour nap and a 1.5 hour nap so it makes me think I haven't been setting him up for success at all.  Today he went down for a 2 hour nap this morning, which I am still in awe over, so I am happy but sad that I feel like I've been neglecting his sleep need unintentionally until this point...  Good luck with it working for you too!

  • What did you do differently to get those great naps?
