What do you do when..

you are home alone and a stranger knocks on your door, or a service person you were not expecting? Ever since I put up my ByPami "Do not ring door bell, no soliciting" sign, no one ever knocks on my door, I've even seen people turn around and go away. But yesterday I heard car doors slam and thought it was DH, so I went to the door and I have windows all around it and it was a man in a Time  Warner cable outfit (we have Dish), but he wasn't in a van. He saw me and smiled and knocked, I had to answer at that point. He was at the wrong house he was looking for my neighbor (asked for him by name) but I felt stupid for opening the door to a stranger, I just never know how to handle it.

DH thinks I am a little weird but I never go to the door unless I'm expecting family/friends over!  When I am expecting a package, and the doorbell rings, I make sure my dog is nearby.  She is huge and barks like crazy!  I feel she will detour anyone from wanting to come in (even though I know that's not 100% foolproof.)  If someone does ring the doorbell wanting to sale something, etc, I don't open the door blaming I can't control my dog.  Again, they don't seem to mind. 

It's your house, if you don't feel comfortable opening the door then don't!  It is always better to be safe than sorry!  

I'm glad the TWC guy just had the wrong house.

i just don't answer if i'm not expecting anyone - unless they are police type folk lol......  of course if they have seen you i guess that kind of changes things....

i also use the dog as an excuse and have yelled through the door that i can't open due to the dog. she's got a big mean bark so that also works in my favor.

If they see me - I usually yell through the window.

I don't answer if I am not expecting someone, unless it is a neighbor or someone I know. I don't care if they see me or not. I still don't open the door. My issue is probably equal parts safety and also the fact I don't want to be bothered! lol

I sometimes open the main door, but the storm door is still closed. They see my 85 pound dog and normally step back (most people are afraid of big dogs). If I don't recognize the car or person, I try to ignore it.

If I'm not expecting anyone, I don't answer the door.  If I do for whatever reason, I have a large dog who looks and sounds quite mean if she doesn't recognize the person at the door, and particularly if it's a man, so hopefully she does her job in scaring off anyone with shady motives!
