silly question...what if water breaks in a pool?

So, because I have been getting more and more huge and love to work out, I have resorted to swimming each night after work at the gym.  I plan on doing this until I deliver because the weightless feeling is fantastic.  Would I know if my water broke in the pool? What if it happened and I had no idea? I can just picture icky chlorinated gym pool water seeping up in my cervix and it freaks me out!

side note: I know it is rare to have your water break before having contractions...figured I would ask!

Re: silly question...what if water breaks in a pool?

  • My water broke before I had contractions.  After the first initial gush, it still keeps trickling.  So after you dry yourself off, I would imagine you would still feel leaking-ness.  Especially after swimming, try smelling it, just get some on your fingers as weird as that sounds.  If it is urine dribble (happend to all of us who've had a baby on the bladder lol) it will smell, well, like pee.  Pool water will smell like whatever pool you were in, If it is your fluid it will smell a little like straw or hay, kind of sweet.  Good luck.  :)

  • Good tips, thanks.  Yeah, I guess it makes sense that it would continue to leak...I was picturing it coming out mostly at once Tongue Tied

  • i was just wondering the same thing good question. Just got out of the bath and thought well what if my water broke and now I have no Idea. I did hear that it smells like hay how funny

  • And for the record, there is no silly question when you are nervous and pregnant.  Wink
  • You usually continue to leak, so even if you gush in the pool, you'll notice more leaking afterwards.  And amniotic fluid does not always smell.  Mine had no odor when it broke with DD. . .
  • My Dr. told me that even if your water breaks in the bath tub (or a pool), when you get out you would still be able to feel a leaking of fluid.  He said it is rare to have a gush of fluid and then no more leaking.
