Our one-car family has become a no-car family after DH was hit by another driver last Thursday . So it looks like we're going to be in the market for a new (used) car. We were driving a 2003 Passat that we really liked and while functional with twins, it wasn't very conducive. The stroller took up almost the entire trunk and obviously we couldn't have a 3rd adult in the car.
So I'd love to hear what y'all drive and how you like it. Thanks!!!
Re: What car do you drive?
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
I don't have my twins yet but I drive a trailblazer that I really like. My dream car is a murano however.
DH drives a 2 door and once we get the cash I think we're going to trade that in for an outback or something similar...
We have an '04 Toyota Camry and we have peg-perego car seats, my husband has the seat as far as it can go (I think) and it doesn't touch the car seat, although it's only a few inches at that- it works for us, for now
Someone can also sit in the back, in the middle I had to sit in the back since my DH and I had a friend come out to breakfast with us and I was pretty surprised.
As far as trunk space the DSNG takes up a lot of room, but there is still enough room for groceries and other items
Your best option would be to try out a few vehicules with your car seats and stroller and make your decision for there
We have a Ford Freestyle, which is set up much like a mini-van on the inside--3 rows (2nd row is captains seats, 3rd row is bench). The double stroller takes up pretty much all the "trunk" space, but there's a lot of room in the car still for groceries and stuff. And we have a spare seat in case there's ever an extra passenger.
Sometimes I wish we had an actual minivan, it might be easier to get into. Othertimes I'm glad we have an SUV, it's sportier and the utility is nice.
The Freestyle has since been redesigned on the outside and is now called the Ford Flex though (and at one point in time was the Taurus X or Ex).
I'm short so we went for a station wagon. It's nice because now that the kids are just shy of being 3, they can climb into the car and into their car seats without help. I just need to buckle them in and we're good to go.
We couldn't afford new so we went used. I ended up with a SAAB 9-5 linear wagon. If you buy between 2003-2005, those are pretty good years. We got a $ 40K car with 30K miles on it for $ 11K. Not bad! Luxury cars seem to really lose their value once they are driven off of the dealer's lot. But it is a luxury car and when bought used, without the luxury price tag. Even the low end model has heated leather seats, moon roof, light up vanity mirrors, a rear view that auto dims when people come up on you with their brights, power seats that remember your settings, etc.
The only challenge is making sure that you have someone near you that can work on them and when they do, they are more than your average repair bill on something like a Honda. Figure your average repair (not maintenance) bill is going to be about $500. Other than that, it is super fun to drive, there is a lot of room in the rear for gear and a folding cover over the cargo space so it doesn't advertise what's in there. There is also a cargo net so you can place groceries on top and it won't go flying into the back seat.
As for a third adult.. we were able to fit a 10 year old in between the kids (in their car seats). You might be able to fit a petite adult back there but definitely not your average sized person or large man.
As far as gas mileage. My dash meter usually reads 30-31 mpg freeway and about 24-26mpg around town.

This! this is my dream car for our twins. I have an X5 right now...breaks down all the time and it's costly to repair. Really want a Tahoe.
this exactly, but ours is a 10. we can't recline our seats at all right now. otherwise great car.
we drive the girls in a volvo xc70 '06. i wanted extra cargo space without driving a minivan or suv. so i got a wagon i do love the car! have sat in back between the girls many times.
both dh and i are 5'9" and the front to back space with rear facing car seats is tight. we are just about to switch from our britax infant seats to radian xtsl (or whatever it's called), and i think things might get even tighter. i'm miffed as i want to keep the girls rear facing as long as possible, at least till 2yrs old. now i think we'll be tempted to turn them ff sooner for comfort.
so my advice is to find the site (sorry i don't have the link, but my dh found it by himself so shouldn't be too hard) that tells you which cars fit with rear facing seats behind driver and passenger.
I drive a Chrysler T&C mini van and I am happy with it. Comfortable to drive and has all the things I like: remote start, heated seats, push button side and rear door opening. We can fit everything we need with ease. And believe it or not I still get checked out in it and shouldn't that still be important (he he)
There aren't many options if you wanted to stay with a VW. My DH just traded in his VW Passat for a VW CC. I love it but I wouldn't suggest it for a one car family with 2 carseats. We previously looked at their minivan and it is built similar to the T&C but was more expensive at the time of our purchase and the Tourag was out of our price range and really bad on gas.

I'm totally ditching it for a passat wagon when we don't have 3 in carseats! I had a jetta, and looooved it.
ditto
it was hard to sell my super cute mini cooper convertible for a mini van and i swore i'd never drive a mini van but i must admit i am really loving our odyssey. for one thing, i don't think i would even be able to fit behind the wheel of my mini anymore.
