Up 8lbs at my 9wk appt

I know I shouldn't harp on this, but I feel like I'm gaining too fast! I'm naturally a pretty small person (5'4", 122 lbs) but was already up 8 lbs at my 9 wk appt today. It shouldn't have come as that much of a surprise, since I'm constantly eating, but still . . .

I read Dr. Luke's book, and I know early weight gain is important . . . my doctor didn't seem too concerned, though she did giggle when she saw I was wearing the beBand with my work pants and said "it's too early for that!"

Anybody else out there put on weight rapidly and early? Am I going to end up gaining 80 lbs? I'm a little afraid.

  • I put on weight rapidly at first as well.  I was up 20 pounds by about 18 weeks without any effort and I think as much as 30lb by the time I was 22-23 weeks.  (I started at 112 and I'm 5' tall)  The weight has slowed down since.  At my 30w4d appointment, I was up 38 pounds, so I didn't keep gainig at the rate I gained before.  I think I'll end up at about 45-50 pounds total and my drs. are saying a bunch of it is water.  It is much more difficult to eat and gain in the 3rd trimester with twins, so don't worry, you and your babies will be fine.

  • I gained quickly eraly, but only gained 45 total.  It's a good thing to gain early!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Thank you! This is exactly what I was hoping to hear.I don't feel like I'm being unhealthy in my food choices so I guess I'll just keep on with my ways and be happy knowing I'm (hopefully) growing some plump babies.

  • Some people gain early and then slow down.  I don't gain until well into the 2nd tri, but then I gain pretty rapidly.  I lost weight until my 17w appt and still ended up gaining 48 pounds.  Don't worry so much about what the scale says as long as you're making good food choices (think fruits, veggies, milk, lean meats, etc instead of cookies).  As long as you're eating healthy, you won't gain too much more than your babies need and they'll get all of the nutrients to make them big and healthy (not saying that you can't gain 60-80 pounds, just that it'll be "healthy" weight, not just junk food fat).
  • I really think we're all different.  I had one month where I gained 13 lbs!!  (I still maintain I was retaining water...lol)  I put weight on early, put on 22 lbs or so by 20 weeks.  That said, I'm now 32 weeks and up 38 lbs, so my weight gain slowed substantially.  3rd tri, it seems impossible to put on weight b/c your stomach is the size of a golf ball.

Here's a concept - eat HEALTHY.  We (esp. doctors) all get so caught up in weight.  Don't eat a ton of junk, don't eat an entire pizza in a sitting, don't use pregnancy as an excuse to gorge yourself.  Eat a balanced diet and you'll be fine.  :)

  • When I was pregnant and freaking out about my weight gain somebody on this board reminded me I would have years to lose the weight but my babies only had a few months to gain the weight they needed to.

  • Don't worry at all!  You want to be up 20-25 lbs by 20 weeks!  Trust me, your weight will fluctuate the whole pregnancy.  I would gain 8 lbs in 2 weeks and then I would lose 4 etc.  Just try to throw in as many healthy foods as you can and relax and enjoy it :)

  • I can't believe your doctor said it was "too early" to be wearing the band....

Good thing she doesn't know me...I bought maternity pants at 6 weeks and I've been wearing them ever since.  I started at 125...and I weigh 140 now!.  So 15 pounds in 10 weeks Indifferent

  • I feel like I'm in the minority here, I've lost about 10lbs, and I really have to force myself to eat.  I feel so sick when I'm done.  And nothing ever sounds good.

Anything fried, sweet or chicken just makes me gag.
