has anyone had to use eye patches to strengthen their child's eye muscles?

colton's dr wants us to see a specialist as she is not sure he is focusing properly.  just wondering what could be in our future.

  • Teagan had accomdative estropia and we used patching for a bit to help with her focusing.  Basically her issue was that when she was watching tv or something her left eye would turn inward thus trying to focus on the object.

Best advice please don't read all the info about it on the internet, it is scary.  Remind me again how old is Colton?

We had to do a few other procedures to correct the issue, but Teagan was much older when it was diagnosed.  Feel free to email me if you want, I will be happy to offer advice since we have been through it.

Hopefully in Colton's case it is just a patch and your done.  Hugs mama.

  • We had to patch H's eye b/c the doc. thought she was not where others her age were when it comes to eyes...she hated it and I hated it too. I was the worst when it came to keeping it on her for 2 hours a day b/c it was such a struggle. Turns out...she was just a serious little girl and liked to grab at the doctors fingers instead of playing with the toy he had.

I hope all is well with C...he looks great to me!!

  • Ashlyn has glasses b/c she is farsighted and her left eye turns inward when she focuses on something up close (just as if you try to look at the end of your nose with perfect vision and your eyes cross). The 1st dr we saw said that we'd have to patch her left eye for 4 hrs (min, potentially 8) a day until she was 9 years old. I was DEVASTATED. We saw another dr who completely disagreed and said that if we could get her eyes to stay straight with glasses, we might be able to avoid patching. So far, so good. She's been in her glasses for about a year, we haven't patched, and her eyes are straight. She has accomodative esotropia (sp?). Did you see a pedi opthamalogist (sp? again!) or is your pedi suggesting the patch? I'd really suggest seeing a pedi opthamalogist if you haven't already. We see Dr. Weeks at Eye Physcians & Surgeons in Atlanta. She's super nice and really good with Ashlyn, unlike the 1st guy we saw who was not very baby friendly. There are lots of message boards and whatnot for parents who have to patch. I did a ton of research when we first got our diagnosis. If you DO have to patch, hopefully he'll start it so early that he won't know any different and it won't be a huge struggle to keep it on. From what I understand, starting patching at 2 and beyond can be a huge battle :( I hope you don't need the patch, but I've heard sooo many personal success stories since we got Ashlyn's glasses.

  • He didn't want to continue to look or focus on the Dr so she wants us to see a pedi opthamalogist.  He looks at myself, Ridge and DH all the time though. He just doesn't like to look at people in the face, mainly strangers, for long periods of time.  Ridge was the same when he was Colton's age and is fine ...actually about 1 year above average in verbal ability and problem solving so I'm not too worried about it.  The Dr just wants to be cautious as she said sometimes this is a sign their eye muscles need strengthening.

Oh the Google search ...I'm refusing to do it as it always freaks me out.

Apt is Monday so cross your fingers he is just being coy.  :)  But didn't know if anyone had experience with patches if it is muscular weakness.

  • Well, please keep us posted. Teagan has a ped. eye appt next week, he was recommended by ours in NC.

Patching would be for a muscular weakness. By patching the good eye it will make the weak eye work harder to see.  There are all forms of treatment, patching is usually the first step.  We went from patching to drops to bifocals back to drops and then corrective surgery.

By chance does anyone in your family have an eye weakness? I ask b/c it is hereditary and my aunt had one as a child too.

Maybe he is just being shy especially if your oldest did it too. :)
