Gabriella/Gabrielle versus Gabby

I really love Gabriella or Gabrielle but I'm not sure how I feel about the nickname Gabby...   I like NN's in general but Gabby reminds me of a "chatty" person--someone who gabs.  Gabriella flows beautifully with our last name.  I KNOW people will automatically shorten to Gabby. Thoughts on the NN Gabby?  Thanks!

Re: Gabriella/Gabrielle versus Gabby

  • I've always liked Gabby. When I was little I used to pretend my name was Gabrielle/Gabby lol.

  • It's ok. I like Gabrielle MUCH more than Gabriella (just not a fan of any of the -ella names).

  • I love Gabriella and Gabrielle! I've had several in my classes and never had one that wasn't cute or sweet. Most are nicknamed Gabby/Gaby but I have had 2 whose nicknames were Bri or Brielle. Is that an option you'd like?

  • I don't like Gabby but really like the name Gabriella.  I would go for Ella as a nn.
  • I dont really like Gabby. I considered Gabriella and NN potential: Ella.

It's a beautiful name and I would use it, if I were you!

  • If someone automatically shortens it then say she goes by her full name Gabriella/Gabrielle. Not a fan of the NN Gabby, but love the names Gabriella?Gabrielle.
  • I like it but it doesnt mean you have to use it;  she may not be a Gabby....she may be something else.  Personally, I dont get giving your kid a nn until he/she arrives;  most nns I know grow out of personality traits or something like a kid mispronouncing their own name (ex. we call my nephew Juju cuz when he was little he couldnt say Jared).  Name her what you like and relax on the nn

  • This is the reason  I didn't use Gabriella for my daughter. I went back and forth with Gabriella and  Gianna...in the end I went with Gianna because  i HATE Gabby! I also prefer ella over iell

That being said...my older son has a name that I refused to NN...he is older now and he does not have a nn he uses his full name and so does everyone else.

  • I think that too, but only if I see it spelled out as Gabby.  On the other hand, I think the nickname Gabi (pronounced the same of course) is really cute.  It must be a mental thing.
  • I really don't like Gabby at all, even though I like the name Gabriella
  • My sister just had a daughter and named her Gabrielle, nn Gabby.  I think Gabrielle is a beautiful name and Gabby is a very cute nickname.

  • Gabriella is very beautiful name. I know a Gabrielle and she goes by that. I also know a Gabrielle that goes by Gabby. I don't think of a chatty person when I hear the name.

  • We have a Gabrielle, and we often call her Gabby/Gabs....i love it and get many compliments on her name.  Like PP said, you could always go with Bri or Elle/Ella if you want.

     Good luck!

  • I really like Gabrielle with the nn Elle.

  • I love both but used it up at a MN for DD#1.  I don't really like Gabby as a NN.
  • I love the nn Gaby!  However, if you don't like it, I would use one of the other nickname suggestions like Ella.
