How long do helium balloons stay afloat?

I'm wondering if I can go to Party City for balloons the day before the birthday party.  I know mylar balloons stay up forever, but what about latex?

  • I don't know, but if you have a dollar store near you, they sell the mylar ones for (obviously) a dollar.
  • I got DS' latex helium balloons from Party City the day of his party and they were almost to the floor by the end of the day. Bah.
  • Sounds like I'm the odd one out. We got ours on Friday (latex and mylar), party was on a Saturday and the latex ones didn't start dying until Sunday.
  • if it's cooler out, the balloons are going to contract = non-floating balloons, so if you do get them, make sure you keep them in a warm place. there should be no reason why they shouldn't last up to a week

  • When we went to get our balloons (at a floral shop) the lady asked if we wanted "High Float" in them. I think that's what she called it anyway. I was getting them the day of the party so we were okay, but she recommended it if we were not having the party until the next day or something.

  • yeah, we did the high float for 30cents extra...they stayed up for a week.  we still have balloon from dec that is floating in DD playroom.

Ah!  So living in Florida should help me there.  I think I'll call Party City and see if they have this "high float" that some of you spoke of.  Thanks everyone!

  • Late to the party, but definitely get "high float".  We've had DS's up for 2.5 weeks now!

  • When I get mylar balloons from the $ store, they seriously last for months! We JUST deflated the ones we had from New Years Eve! I mean, they were a little droopy, but still floating!

We had bought one of those balloon kits w/ the latex balloon for DS' b-day and those we low floating by the end of the day and the next day they did not float at all.

I would probably wait until the day of just in case, unless they have the "high float" stuff.
