Trying to Get Pregnant

Guess What my Dr. said...

Stop trying so hard, relax, and let it happen! I couldn?t believe it. I have never called them to ask questions or anything, and I called and told the nurse that I had began charting & using OPK, and that I know it takes a healthy couple around 1 year to conceive. However, I did not get a positive OPK this month and was concerned about my post O temps being on the low side, and asked how many cycles, if this trend continues, should I wait until I come in to look a little further into this.

She came back and said that the doctor wants me to stop charting and using OPK. he only recommends doing that if you?re having trouble trying to conceive. And that charting and using OPK adds much unneeded stress to the process. I told her that I am just using them to make sure I am timing my intercourse correctly etc. and she said ?well that?s what he is recommending?.

Would you look for a new doctor? He never even went over any of the information I have learned here in our pre-TTC appointment.

  • I find that doctors know very little about charting, especially the male ones.

I might bring it up to my midwife, they have more experience with that stuff IMO, but that is just for my practice.

I don't know.. my doc never told me about any of it either. She recommended reading WTEBYE, though. At the same time, she didn't tell me NOT to chart either.  If you feel strongly about it then yes, look elsewhere. It's not like you have to stop charting just because he said to..

    That sucks, though. :(

This! I have a female OBGYN and a male RE, but my RE is all for it! GL

  • My doctor is wonderful.  She recommended OPKs.  When I told her I was charting she said it was totally up to me and if it made me feel better or like I was doing something, it's totally fine.  She didn't really think it was necessary and didn't recommend it, but she didn't recommend I stop.  It's up to you whether you stay with your doctor, but I always find it odd when the doctor recommends NOT doing something that isn't harmful in the first place!

  • I don't think I would look for another doc just based on that, if he is a good doc in other respects.

You don't HAVE to follow his advice obviously.  Charting and OPKS certainly aren't going to hurt.

  • my OB could care less about charting. he didn't tell me not to chart but he just didn' t care if i did. i guess because charting doesn't increase your 20% chance every month, it just lets you know when your going to ovulate.
  • Funny you posted this...my doctor said the same thing when I asked her about charting at our pre-TTC appt. She said to "relax and have fun with it". I was thinking....lady, I have been having fun the wole time we had been married - now it is time to get to business.

So as far as finding a new doc - that's up to you. I would be upset if I felt they weren't hearing my concerns.

  • Got to be honest. Mine was the same way. Didn't understand many of the things I was doing (POM juice, green tea, Mucinex, etc). Told me to relax and make an appointment in October if nothing happens.

  • I don't know if I would change doctors over charting vs. not charting, but if you feel like your doctor is not taking your concerns seriously then yes I would find a new doc pronto!

Edited because I accidentally hit "quote" instead of "reply" to the OP and my response was huge!  I deleted the quoted text :-)

  • I'd find a new doc that is at least receptive to how you want to handle your reproductive cycles.

  • Mine told me to relax too and if I wanted to, I could add in OPK's.  But she didn't care if I charted or not.

  • I don't know if I'd leave my doctor at this point if I were you, but really, you don't have to follow his advice.

P.S. Looking at your chart, I don't think you ovulated yet.

  • Sorry!  I'm sure that is frustrating.  I have my annual GYN appt. at the end of next month.  I'm anxious to see what her opinion will be of charting.

I 2nd what PPs have said...that it looks like you have not O'd yet.  Good Luck!  I am right there with you!
