Baby Showers

adoption shower ideas

My cousin recently adopted a baby girl and the adoption will be final in the spring (hopefully!!)  So, I want to throw an adoption shower to celebrate the finalization.  I think the venue will be a small urban park that has a gazebo, an open lawn, and some jungle gym equipment.  Have any of you thrown/attended such an event?  If so, could you please throw some ideas out for me to consider? (pics would be great too!!)  Thanks

Re: adoption shower ideas

  • this is a great idea ... I don't see why the "rules" would be different than any other welcome baby party?

if you are looking towards doing a spring outdoor celebration a BBQ style picnic would lend itself well to the party.  Or you can do a mid-afternoon cake and ice cream party.

    Have fun!

  • Since the baby will not longer be a newborn (is that correct?) I would not call it a shower...but more of a Welcome Home Baby Party.  It sounds like a great location.  Just let people know what her age is at the time so they get age appropriate items.

  • When I did it, I made sure to note in the invitation that the baby was X months old.  Not every baby is adopted as a newborn, and when shopping for a gift it helps to know if you're looking for a 0 - 3 month or 12-month size.

I think my wording was something like,

"Baby J Smith has made her long-awaited arrival.  The newest addition to the Smith family is 3 months old with bright blue eyes, dimples, and happy smiles for her Mommy and Daddy.

Please join us for a traditional baby shower on Saturday, date, at 2:00 PM.  Please RSVP to blahblahblah."

  • I agree about just having a regular shower, but indicating on the invite how old the child is since gifts would be a little different depending on the age.  Obviously there's some stereotypical shower games that wouldn't be appropriate since they are focused on the pg mommy-to-be.  Your cousin can also register.  You could look for more ideas on the Adoption board.

  • Is this a domestic or international adoption?  If international, perhaps you could theme the party around the baby's birth country, and maybe create a game around it too.

Friends did this for a friend who adopted from South Korea.  It was really sweet.
