Question about initials...

DH and I have an absolute favorite boy name: Graham. We are 100% set on it. For the middle name, we would love to use David, which is both DH's middle name and DH's dad's name (he is very close to his dad.) The issue: a couple of years ago when I mentioned this name combination to a friend as a possibility for our future child, she immediately freaked out that the first two initials would be GD (the vulgar slang.) This had never crossed my mind at all before and I'm sure I never would have thought of it if she hadn't mentioned it, but now I'm really starting to wonder if we'll be doing the right thing if we use those names. I personally think she's overreacting; I mean, the kid's full initials will be GDL - totally innocuous. We're keeping the name a secret until he's born so unfortunately I can't poll any of the rest of my friends about this, so I'm asking you.

What do you think? Not a big deal or use a different middle name?

Re: Question about initials...

  • Not a big deal at all. I never would have thought that. Besides you would never just use the initials GD. It will either be GDL or GL.

  • I think people over think the initial thing too much. First, how many people only use their first and middle initial.  Next, with internet boards and IM's there are shortened forms of every word imaginable out there that you are bound to find something you don't like.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • My husband's name is Graham with a middle name that starts with a "D".  No one has ever said anything, and besides, how often do people know other people's middle names?  And the full initials for Husband are worse (GDS, kinda like GD's).  You should be more than fine with GDL.

PS- I LOVE his name, good choice imo :)

  • OMG, I'm an initial nut (worried about every possible negative connotation) and I would not think twice about a FN and MN with the initals GD.

Your friend is a nut. Go with the name, it's beautiful.

  • Not a big deal. I think it is a very cute name!~

  • I never would have thought of that... and since there is an extra letter for the last name in the real initials... I don't see an issue at all.

  • When would you EVER use just the first and second initial together without the last initial as well?  Really.  Unless all 3 initials spell something bad like T.I.T or something similiar I would not worry about it at all.
  • MY initials, first and last, are actually GD. My lovely mom made me aware of this a couple months before I was getting married (and acquiring the D in place of an F). Thanks mom! Anyway...even though it's my first and last, NO ONE ever notices, thinks of it, or says anything. So especially if its the first and middle, not a big deal at all. :)
