I know dehydration in pregnancy can be really bad...I was in L&D last night for bleeding (turned out to just be irritated cervix) and they said I was dehydrated and needed to drink a lot of fluids. Of course about 4 hours after I got home I caught my DD's stomach bug...I've been throwing up since 2am..I can't even keep down water. I called OB's oncall number and the dr there told me I was probably fine but if I wanted to go get IV fluids I could...basically made it sound like its no big deal and I'm overreacting..I don't want to rush off to the hospital again if its nothing but I also don't want to just go along and have something happen to my baby! Were any of you hospitalized for a stomach bug? how long did your dr wait before you went in?
Re: stomach flu during pregnancy?
Bar tab = $156,000, Bus to Foxwoods = $0, Puking in the Stanley Cup = Priceless
When I had food poisoning a month ago, I had vomiting/diarrhea and couldn't keep down fluids. Both my regular doc and OB said if it stayed that way more than about 12 hours I should call them because I would need to come in for an IV so I wouldn't get dehydrated. Fortunately the medicine kicked in before 12 hours so I could keep sown some (flat) ginger ale and didn't need to worry about it.
Seems like no fluids for about 12 hours might be a decent rule of thumb since I'm not the only one told that.
I just had this. I caught DD's stomach bug and I could not keep anything down. I was vomiting/dryheaving every 15min for over 6hrs. By that time I had not had any fluids for 12 hours. DR office recommended that I could come in for fluids- they did not seem too concerned either - but I was very concerned - so I ended up going to ER, and was sent to L&D for an over night observation. I was given IV fluids and nausea meds to be able to keep solids down. I am so glad I went in. I am feeling so much better now. There is no way I could have rehydrated myself with out an IV. IMO - I think it is a big deal if you can't keep fluids down for more than 12hours. I would go in - but that is my advice. Hope you feel better soon.

Your OB is likely right, you will probably be fine if you wait out the bug. I had severe morning sickness with both pregnancies, and I wasn't able to keep down water in the first trimesters. But somehow we made it through 12 weeks!
That being said, I did have to go to the hospital when I caught the stomach flu in December. It was non stop vomiting (50 times in 2 hours - very unpleasant!) and I knew I needed additional help.
