stomach flu during pregnancy?

I know dehydration in pregnancy can be really bad...I was in L&D last night for bleeding (turned out to just be irritated cervix) and they said I was dehydrated and needed to drink a lot of fluids. Of course about 4 hours after I got home I caught my DD's stomach bug...I've been throwing up since 2am..I can't even keep down water. I called OB's oncall number and the dr there told me I was probably fine but if I wanted to go get IV fluids I could...basically made it sound like its no big deal and I'm overreacting..I don't want to rush off to the hospital again if its nothing but I also don't want to just go along and have something happen to my baby! Were any of you hospitalized for a stomach bug? how long did your dr wait before you went in?

  • The stomach bug that's been going around seems to pass quickly.  I'd probably wait until you hit the 24 hour mark...and if you STILL can't keep anything down go in to the ER.

  • I had a stomach bug last weekend and called my MW.  She said that if I am vomiting and/or have diarrhea that they want to see me at the hospital if I can't hold any liquids down for 12 hours or more.  Fortunately it wasn't that bad for me.  Good luck.  It stinks!
  • When I had food poisoning a month ago, I had vomiting/diarrhea and couldn't keep down fluids. Both my regular doc and OB said if it stayed that way more than about 12 hours I should call them because I would need to come in for an IV so I wouldn't get dehydrated. Fortunately the medicine kicked in before 12 hours so I could keep sown some (flat) ginger ale and didn't need to worry about it.

Seems like no fluids for about 12 hours might be a decent rule of thumb since I'm not the only one told that.

  • I just had this.  I caught DD's stomach bug and I could not keep anything down. I was vomiting/dryheaving every 15min for over 6hrs.  By that time I had not had any fluids for 12 hours. DR office recommended that I could come in for fluids- they did not seem too concerned either - but I was very concerned  - so I ended up going to ER, and was sent to L&D for an over night observation.  I was given IV fluids and nausea meds to be able to keep solids down.  I am so glad I went in. I am feeling so much better now. There is no way I could have rehydrated myself with out an IV. IMO - I think it is a big deal if you can't keep fluids down for more than 12hours.  I would go in - but that is my advice.  Hope you feel better soon.

  • Your OB is likely right, you will probably be fine if you wait out the bug. I had severe morning sickness with both pregnancies, and I wasn't able to keep down water in the first trimesters. But somehow we made it through 12 weeks!

That being said, I did have to go to the hospital when I caught the stomach flu in December. It was non stop vomiting (50 times in 2 hours - very unpleasant!) and I knew I needed additional help.

  • I had the stomach bug last weekend and when I called the on-call doctor, he told me not to worry until 24 hours. Luckily the virus went away around hour #16.  Feel better soon!
