how do you use hair rollers?

This is kindof embarassing, i have no clue.  Only a year ago did i learn how to blow dry my hair.  Now I am ready to move on, anyone willing to write up a little tutorial.  What do the diferent sizes do?  how do i use them?

thanks,

Re: how do you use hair rollers?

  • The different sizes are going to make different size curls.  The small ones will make tight curls, the large ones will make loose curls.  I have shoulder length hair and use the large and medium size ones.

Its best to make four sections of hair starting at the top of your head and going down the back.  Seperate a piece of hair at the bottom close to your neckline and start rolling the roller up, making sure the end of your hair is tucked neatly. Otherwise you'll get a funny end when you take them out.

Try not to make the pieces too big or the curl won't take.  Do that all of over your head.  I'm not sure what kind you're using, sizes etc but you won't be an expert the first time.  LOL  They def take some practice.

  • how many do you use for your whole head?  what is the advantage over a curling iron?  how long do they stay in?
  • Hi, my name is Kate, and I'm a hot roller addict. I've used hot rollers on an almost daily basis for about 15 years. Yeah, I don't change things up very often.

They do take a little practice. Sometimes after I get a haircut it takes me a while to get it "right." Start with clean, dry hair. Not putting too much hair in each one is key. I think most of them come with clips now, I prefer the ones that come with pins. I don't know if you can find those anymore or not though. I tend to use big ones in the back, medium on the sides, and a couple of small ones on the bottom. I like lots of big curls though. It seems weird but I often have to use the small rollers to get enough curl. Otherwise I get more of a wave.

Anyway, so you pull a section of your hair, start at the bottom, roll it up, and clip/pin it. Think of it like a curling iron, and if you don't wrap the end nicely around the curler, you'll get funky bent ends, just like you would if you used a curling iron. (Oh, oops, I saw Garnett told you that, too. Oh well, it's worth repeating.)

Let em sit for as long as you want, but at least 15 minutes. I always put my curlers in and then put my make up on. After you take them out, finger comb it and shape it, spray it, and you're good to go.

My hair has gotten pretty long now, but I'd say I use about 12 or so. I usually use 3 big ones in the back (starting on top), 2 medium ones on each side, one small one on each side, one small one on each side near the back, and then fill in whatever else is needed. I honestly tend to use smaller sized than I think most people think I do.

The advantage over a curling iron is that after the learning curve, it's easy. It honestly takes me less than 3 minutes to put them in, I do other stuff while they set, and then it takes me another 3 minutes to take them out, comb it out, and spray. I don't have time to stand there and hold a curling iron. Nor do I have the patience. Also, I shower at night, let my hair dry overnight, so I never blow it dry.

The "look" is different than what you would get with a curling iron. I don't know how to explain that, but it is.

Hang on, I'll see if I have a picture to PIP.

    ETA pictures.

Here's pretty Kate with curlers in. Thanks, DH.

And I guess this is pretty typical of what it looks like by evening-ish. It's usually pretty "big" right after I curl it.
