2nd Trimester

Medicine question

I'm siiiiick. Like, really sick. I can't breath at night, I'm up all night sitting straight up because I can't breath. My voice has been terribly raspy and hurts. It's just a really bad cold. What can I take? I want to take nyquil to just sleep, but I know that's probably out the window. (I think theres alcohol in it?). Something other than tylenol please! I'm miserable!

Re: Medicine question

  • Try some benedryl- it will help you sleep.

If you think it could be allergies try getting your doc to prescribe you some xyzal... its saved me. I was having everything you are, but it was allergies- I was miserable. I couldn't survive without it.

  • Mucinex, Sudafed, Afrin spray and Robitussen DM are all on my list from my doc.

  • I just pulled out my ok medicine to take during pregnancy from my doctor and it says for colds & allergies: robitussin or robitussin-dm cough syrup, triaminic or triaminic-dm cough syrup, chlor-trimeton, sudafed and benedryl

It also states * Avoid any medications containing alcohol, aspirin or zinc

  • I'd call your doc and ask, I ended up going in and getting some cough syrup with codeine to help me sleep.  However you can't use that in your first trimester.  Also for me sudafed is on the no-no list for first trimester.  (I know this is the second trimester board, but anyone can be reading this.)

  • tylenol, neti pot, tea w/ honey, vicks cough drops, cool mist humidifier, salt rinse for throat or chloraseptic spray. I had a bad one in the 3rd tri w/ DS. I wish I'd known about the neti pot then - it really helps. Oh, and sleep propped up.
  • I'm thinkin I would call or see my doc. It sounds like you may need more than OTC stuff. Good luck! Hope you feel better.

  • Echoing the above, bendadryl should help you sleep and may help some symptoms (or myabe not). Also have to agree that the neti pot is worth a try. I picked one up at CVS last week and it has really helped me with my cold (and it is not nearly as gross as I thought it would be).

  • I am just getting over a cold and used benadryl at night to help me sleep.  A humidifier in my bedroom was great and those vicks plug-ins help.  Saline sprays help with the congestion some.  I was worried that it was developing into a sinus infection since I seeing some color and my teeth were hurting.  My doctor told me to take sudafed (the meth kind, the PE kind doesn't work, her words I swear) according to package directions for 48 hours and see if that helps.  If not I am supposed to follow up with their office.

    Hope you feel better soon.
