I'm due in July, so I've been trying to avoid buying maternity clothes for the current cold weather. Instead, for work I recently bought some nicer short-sleeve tops with the plan to wear them now with cardigans, and then plain when it warms up. Unfortunately, my belly is expanding fast! The shirts were not advertised as being for a specific trimester of pregnancy -- but what are the odds that, come June (and the warm weather I was planning so diligently for!), I can't fit into them anymore?
(If it matters, I'm at 18 weeks and have gained about 9 pounds total)
Re: Dumb maternity clothes Q for 2nd time moms
I'm usually a size 2 pants and a xs-s top.
in maternity (mostly from old navy) I bought size 4 pants/shorts (my butt is where I gain a lot so I go up a size) and bought xs for the beginning of my pregnancy and had smalls for the mids 20 to later 30 weeks were fine. I did find the last couple of weeks they started to get a bit shorter so I did buy 2 medium tanks that I put under them to get me through...
I don't have an answer but hey I'm a first time mom in Chicago due in July too!
And I am wondering the same thing. Some of the shirts I have purchased are a little big now but I wonder if the stuff I'm wearing now will fit in June/July? I'm also not trying to buy too much winter stuff but I'm outgrowing my non-maternity clothes quickly!

During my 1st pregnancy, earlier on when I started showing I was in a S and I also wear S in regular clothes. About 6 -8 weeks before my due date I had to buy some M tops, so I don't know if you'll be able to make it to the end or not.
This is the same for me, a S pre-pregnancy, and I bought S maternity tops. Oh well, maybe Chicago will have a warm spring so I can at least get some use out of them! (just watch, now we'll have an April blizzard).

When I was due in August with my first (and now again!), I had exactly the same strategy that you describe. I found that once summer was in full swing I wanted a few more shirts, and I did end up buying the next size up. Those bigger shirts were my favorites at the end of the pregnancy, but I was still able to wear the others.
And remember that you'll still need some maternity shirts for a while after birth and these slightly smaller ones will probably be perfect for that time period.
I have both M & L tops in my maternity collection, so yes, I did have to buy some bigger ones for the last 6 or so weeks. I also remember for the last few weeks I rotated around 3 pairs of work pants (one black, one grey and one khaki, jeans on fridays) because that was all that fit.
I have a range of 3 different sizes of maternity clothes for exactly that problem.
Now, there are women out there who gain in a way (or little enough) where that isn't a problem, but it seems that more times than not, a lot of clothes aren't fitting by the last month or two.
I've just learned to accept it and try to buy on super super clearance to make up for the fact that I usually go up a size at the end.
