Taking a rectal temp (scared)

I'm afraid I may have hurt my LO... either that or she HATES having her temp taken.  She cried harder than I have ever heard her and now I'm scared I put the thermometer in too far.  How would I know?

There was no bleeding, she calmed down and ate and is sleeping peacefully now.

Re: Taking a rectal temp (scared)

  • How far did you put in it?  I was told to only go a half inch...really just the silver tip.  If she is sleeping and fine, chances are you didnt hurt her, she probably just got upset because you were doing something she wasnt used to.

  • I have a hard time with this.  I've tried with the 'rectal' design ones and with a regular one going in only as far as I thought I should have but the reading is always around 97, which is not normal.  99 is.  So I started inserting it just a teeny bit further and now get a reading around 99 every time but both times she has SCREAMED.

Maybe it is just because I am holding her legs up and she wants to arch her back? (she's very very archy).

Should I be doing this with her on her side or tummy instead?  At my pedi they do it with baby on her back so I do it that way too.

  • I'm way too nervous to do it so DH does it but from what I've seen is that its just the silver tip, which as a pp said is about a half an inch. You could try on her tummy and see if thats better but DH has never thrown a fit for having her temp taken rectally so it's hard to say since each baby is different.

You could contact the pedi and have them watch you do it to make sure you are doing it the right way and to reassure you.

  • Yea we have our 4 month appt. on wednesday.  Good idea to do it while they watch, thanks for that!
  • We have this thermometer and I love it: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2266320

This is how I do it - change DD's diaper, wipe her and put a fresh one down. While she is still in that position, put a blob of KY on the tip of the thermometer the stick it in so that the tip is fully inside. It takes maybe 5-10 seconds to register a reading. Then we're done! DD actually cries less when I take her temp rectally than she does if I take it under her arm.
