I think the naps are over forever. :(

DD1 just barely turned 3 and already, I can only get maybe 2 naps a week out of her.  She will play in her room with the door shut while DD2 naps, but still.  Then she's a total grouch by 5pm.

Will she eventually get used to not having a nap and not be a total pill by 5pm?  She's normally such a good girl.  I can't handle two crazy girls...

Re: I think the naps are over forever. :(

  • I always say losing the nap was THE hardest milestone.  She will get used to it, but it may take a week or two.  Also, we do "quiet time" on the couch.  My four year old looks through books or watches a movie, etc...The upside of no naps?  Earlier bedtime!  My son goes to bed at 7:30pm and is out in minutes.  Bedtime used to be much later and the routine would drag on and on and on...

    Good luck!

This is what I was thinking.  That she'll go down earlier and fall asleep quicker.  I just hope I can survive that 2 hour span of time that she's become a devil child.

  • DS is nearly 4 and still naps.  I make him stay in his bed and lie down.  He can take a book/car, his magnadoodle, whatever, but he has to be in bed resting.  He complains nearly every day, but he goes to sleep every day.

  • Yes, losing the nap was THE saddest milestone, I agree! It actually took my DS a couple months to make it through the day without being a wreck around dinnertime. (He dropped naps completely a few months after turning 3.)

But, on a positive note, the early bedtime in the winter is wonderful. We can get DS#1 and DS#2 down by 7 or 7:30. I am wondering what will happen in the summer when it stays lighter longer though...

  • Ohhh...I hate it when that happens!  My girls both gave up naps right at 2.5.  When it happened with #2 I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! lol  But she does go to bed really easy in the evenings & is out like a light.  My first hardly slept at all & even after a long day, preschool, park playing, etc. with no nap she still lays in her room dinking around for like an hour every night.  She's 5 & they both do get a little crazy/cranky around the late afternoon, but it depends on the day...
  • My DD has dropped her nap, too. I can't stand it!

I put a light on a timer in her room and every day I go through the whole nap routine (reading books in bed). She has to stay in her room and play quietly until the light turns off, and then rest time is over. She's never fallen asleep, but if she did the light turning off wouldn't wake her up. And she really does seem to understand the rules. Usually she just lays in her bed, reads books and plays with stuffed animals. But at least she's being quiet and getting a little break, and so am I.

And she goes to bed around 6/6:30.

  • yes and my life is miserable past 4.  it sucks.  all i do is yell and give time outs over and over again because DS can not compose himself at all.

he goes to bed BY 6:15, and our life is a living hell from before dinner around 5ish, till we leave the room.  he is basically a big balling crying, whiney mess, screaming no no no no, over and over again. AWFUL.
