White furniture for boy?

My DH and I are Team Green and are not going to find out the sex of the baby.  In my mind, I have already decided that I wanted white furniture for the baby's room.  Last night, I went out to dinner with my dad and stepmom and they asked about furniture and I said I wanted white furniture and they said, "What if it is a boy?  You can't use white furniture for a boy's room."  Has anyone used white furniture for a boy's room?  I know it is stupid to second guess what I want based on other people's opinions, but I just wanted to get others thoughts/what they had done.  Thanks!

Re: White furniture for boy?

  • They told me at my NT scan they are certain that I am having a boy.

DD's furniture is all white, and I am not buying new furniture as this is probably our last baby.

If it is indeed a boy, then I will paint the room a blue or green. I am sure that the furniture will look fine and he's not going to care anyway.

  • We are team green and I am planning on using white furniture also...
  • White is fine for a boy.  A lot of bedding pictures online show boy's bedding with white furniture.  That's like saying you can't have dark wood for a girl - and we are going with dark wood no matter what the sex.  So I wouldn't worry about it!

  • Sure you can!!

Just make it more boy-ish with the fabrics that you choose!

  • I probably wouldn't use white for a boy, but that's just me. I think it will be fine when they are little. We got a convertible crib and hopefully our furniture will last our little guy until he graduates from high school, and I can't see a teenage boy in a room with white furniture!

  • We are team green & our furniture is off white.  I don't think white furniture is gender specific at all.

We already ordered white furniture and while we won't know til 3/10, I'm positive we're having a boy. The furniture is very "cape cod" so not necessarily romantic/girly. Plus the bedding I plan on getting if it's a boy looks best with a white crib IMO.

    Ditto this.

If we weren't going with the convertible, I would have done a white crib for a boy with navy walls.

If we went team green, I considered navy walls no matter what and then adding dark pink accents if we had a girl.

  • All our furniture is white, but we are using brown and blue bedding/accessories to "macho" it up!

  • We're using white furniture and we're having a boy. I never heard such a thing - furniture is furniture.
  • My son is nearly 10 and has had white furniture his whole life....I don't see the big deal.
  • I like white furniture for a boy or a girl.

Get something streamlined and modern looking and it works with both sexes for the long term IMO.

Maybe they are thinking of the princess beds and dressers that are white that have flower cut outs and scrolls and stuff:)

  • White furniture can be used for either a boy or a girl. We got the Graco Charleston crib and changing table in white, and we are having a boy - first baby, but I plan on using the set for all my future children as well.
  • I agree with PP that I don't really see a teenage boy having white furniture.  I like it for babies though, I guess it depends on how long you plan on keeping it.  I like white but my DH thinks that it looks "cheap" I don't know if it's just the ones he has seen or what.  I tend to disagree.  He likes the natural colors, he says that the dark brown is too cold, he likes the natural because it feels "warm and inviting" for a baby.  Our whole house has lots of dark colored wood so maybe something lighter would be nice for a change.  Good luck! :)

  • We're using white furniture and having a boy.  I've never heard of such a thing.  And by the time our son is a teenager, I'm sure, we'll have either passed down the nursery furniture to other children or given it away.

But if it's still around and in his room, he'll have white furniture that he likes or he'll paint it.

  • YOu know... my mom said the exact same thing to me too.

But in my mind, furniture is furniture and the bedding and room decor are specific to gender.

  • I decided against white for a boy. This furniture has to last until he is a teenager and I cant see him being happy about his white furniture then.
  • We're having a boy and a girl so our theme is blue, red, and white furniture. I think it's fine. Lucas will survive with a white crib! :)

  • I love white furniture for kids rooms. You could even do a cute nautical theme.

  • I have 2 boys and we used white furniture for both of them.  We painted the room blue and got boy bedding and it looked great.  I think it's about personal preference....
  • I have white furniture. I don't think it's a gender thing. My colors are light yellow, light green, and white. I don't like any of the dark colors and the light fake wood I could afford looks too cheap.
