XP: plane travel with dSLR

I asked on the Photography board, but thought I'd ask here as well.

We leave tomorrow for our house hunting trip in Arkansas.  I didn't plan very well and just realized this is our first plane trip since getting our dSLR.  When I had a point and shoot, it easily fit in the diaper bag/purse.  When we travel, I always combine my necessities from my purse and the diaper bag into one large Vera Bradley bag.  My dSLR will fit in it, but not in the case.  Do you think it would be ok wrapped in a baby blanket?  I definitely don't want anything to happen to it, but I also need to take it so we can compare houses, etc.

  • Do you have (or could you borrow) a point and shoot you could take? I wouldn't take it like that...but my DH would kill me if I hurt the camera. : )
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't have an SLR (I want one soooo badly!) but I wouldn't risk it... I would just take the case and carry it.

this is probably a better idea... if you are just taking pics to compare houses

  • No - I dropped the point and shoot and broke it a year or so ago and we never replaced it.  :(  I'm so mad right now....I really want to take it, but I am nervous about taking it!  We will already have the 2 suitcase, G's carseat and pack n play plus my Vera bag and DHs backpack.  I can't believe how much extra you have to take with a LO :)  This is the first time we're flying somewhere other than to see our families with him, and they have all the extras we need there.
  • isn't it 1 carry on plus a personal item? i would think the camera bag isn't that big that you could consider that your purse and the vera bag your carry on
  • You should see the bag this thing came with!  It's like a mini-suitcase.  But, I think I'm leaning toward taking it.  I'll see what DH says when he gets home.  I think a point-and-shoot is going to be on my Christmas list this year.  Too bad I didn't think of it earlier and it could've been on my birthday list! :)
  • If you're bringing the SLR wrapped up in a blanket in your diaper bag and you don't shove the bag anywhere, I would think you'd be okay.  But I would probably just bring the case.  I doubt they will give you a hard time about having extra bags.
  • I would not check it.. definitely carry it on.  Wrap it in something or put it in a smaller bag w/in the diaper bag.  I soooo don't trust the checked stuff.
  • When I take mine anywhere that I don't want to bring the case, I put it in one of those plastic bags that the newspaper comes in (in case a sippy leaks) and then cushion it between the diapers in my purse.

  • As long as you carry it you will be fine. I like the idea of putting it in a big ziplock bag and then wrap it in a small blanket. Or you can buy a small camera case that doesn't take up a lot room. I do this and stick it into a larger bag...like your diaper bag and it doesn't take up much more room than sticking it in alone. I have brought mine to Greece, France and several US trips and never had a problem with damage or what not.
