2nd Trimester

Does the baby NEED this stuff?

I am just curious if the baby needs a jumper, swing, and walker right away?

I am not planning on buying any of that stuff until the baby may actually use it. But I am not sure when they start? I know the walker takes a lil time, but how early do they use a jumper and swing??

Is it essential to have when the baby arrives?

May be a stupid question.

  • I would go ahead and get the swing. The jumper and walker can wait.

  • Well I guess technically baby doesn't NEED any of it. That said, we use the bouncer (not jumperoo, but the little reclined seat) and the swing right away with our newborns. Seems like one of ours would only sleep more than a few hours in the swing at first...

You definitely do not need a jumperoo or a walker right away.

  • None of it's essential.  :D

For us, the swing is since both our other children loved it, and they used them right away.  The walker and the jumper?  We won't get unless they're gifted.

  • Jumper and walker they don't need right away, since they can't use those until they can sit up on their own. The swing though is a LIFESAVER, even when they're teeny-tiny. That was the only way I could shower at first was if I put DS in his swing and pulled it into the doorway of our bathroom.

  • No, the baby won't need a jumper or walker right away...but a swing might come in handy. But if you are having a shower, it would be wise to register or these things, so that you might not even have to buy them - GL!
  • All baby wants or needs is a place to sleep when they are born.  The swing can be used right away, but an exersaucer (much safer than a walker) and bouncer won't be used until baby is able to hold their head well on their own.  Usually between 3-4 months.

  • Baby doesn't need anything except milk and diapers and some clothes :D. You can always run to the store to get that stuff if you feel like you need it later on. It won't be anywhere close to walking until after 7 months! Same with the jumper. Some people put the baby in a swing to help it sleep, particularly colicky babies.
  • We used our swing from the very beginning. So I would say a swing is something you need right away.
  • DD didn't use her swing until 1 month and was done with it by 5 months (I think there was something in the weight guidelines that made me hesitant to put her in it before then).  She never had a jumper or walker.  I wasn't thrilled with a jumper because we have arches instead of door frames, and it's an older house so I question drilling into them (I think we're talking about the same kind of jumper).  I think I was also nervous about her bouncing into the sides of the doorway.  I am a mostly SAHM, so I walked around the house with her a lot when she wanted to be on her feet.  She may have walked on her own earlier if she hadn't gotten used to holding peoples' hands, though--she certainly felt stable enough, she just didn't trust herself to go on her own.
  • You may want think twice about getting a walker. Many babies have been seriously injured while using them.
  • Several of my friends swear by their swing--they said, this was a life-saver for them to help the baby sleep etc.

  • It took 2 months for DS to like the swing...then he napped there during the day for the next 4 months because it was the only place he would sleep.  :)
  • The swing is the only item of those listed that I'll personally buy if I don't receive it as a shower gift...

The others I'll wait on till they need it...

  • I'd get the swing... we used it from week 1 with DD.  Our frieinds decided not to get one as some babies don't like them. After their DD arrived they called us after 2 weeks and asked to borrow ours. It was a life saver for them.  Their DD only wanted to be held and rocked, but once put in the swing she was happy as can be. Allowed the parents a little down time and a break from holding her 24/7.

Get one off of craigslist if you don't want to spend a ton of money, but I would definitely recommend one. The rest of the stuff can wait.

  • We had a papasan style swing and used that and the bouncer from day one. It was nice to have a place near us that DS could sleep. The sit-up style swings would have to be for later.

I was opposed to getting lots of big plastic activity-type centers because DS had plenty of other toys, but we did get a bungee baby bouncer, which DS LOVED at about 5 months old (plus, it takes up no room and packs up VERY small) and a walker because he refused to crawl and was desperate to walk (and my back was hurting from leading him around all the time). People talk about walkers being dangerous (i.e. babies have fallen down stairs), but I can't imagine how that would happen if you are careful and watchful. They can, however, chew up the corners in your house (drywall, trim, etc.) -- I plan to get some foam padding this time around since our house was just refinished.

  • Babies can't use a jumper or a walker until they can support their heads, so you certainly don't need those right away (you can't even use them).  Swings and bouncers can be pretty handy even for a newborn.   Some people don't use walkers at all any more due to safety concerns.

  • I will not be getting a walker for the reasons stated in this Consumer Report article.
