2nd Trimester

In addition to the big items, what else have you started buying?

I am a planner and really would like to get started w/ getting things ready for the baby. We're going to get the big items like the crib, changing table, and potentially a stroller since the one we want is a bit more expensive. A few of my friends told me that I should wait until I have all of my showers before getting things on my own (which would put me about 6 wks before my EDD). What are you planning to do with yours? This is our first; so we are starting from zero (we have no baby stuff except the ones that my mom has been buying for us), and we don't have a lot of family/friends that have hand me downs. TIA!

Re: In addition to the big items, what else have you started buying?

  • The only other big thing we need to get is a dresser and paint.  We have crib, cradle, and change table from DD, then found a really good deal on a travel system, bouncy chair and swing.

I've been told not to get anything else until the shower.  I know my gf is planning a shower, though I don't know when.  I'd prefer it to be earlier than later, since there's a good chance this baby'll come early.

  • I've bought my baby 2 outfits, that's it.  My shower is when I'm 30 weeks and I think I'll get a lot of what I need then.  (We're not buying a crib just yet, he'll sleep in his PnP next to our bed until we move).  Remember, you don't need every baby item right away...all you really need is somewhere for the baby to sleep, diapers, and some clothes.  I'd wait til your shower to buy anything other than furniture.

  • We got the big stuff, crib, changing table, glider chair, got a hand me down basinett, and a bunch of clothing. really the only other things we have purchased was bedding and a couple of outfits and hangers and diapers.
  • In addition to furniture, I've also purchased a breast pump, and organizational items, like canvas bins to put on the changing table shelves and in the closet. I also bought some frames for some art prints I found online. That's been about it for now.
  • Diaper bag, a few gender friendly outfits and a blanket... I am ready to know what this baby is so I can shop!

  • Ha! we've bought a pump, because it was on super clearance, and a case of diapers. No crib, glider, or furniture just yet.

  • I haven't bought anything, but we are going to buy the "big stuff"

I have NO baby stuff either but I am having my shower early so I have time to buy the stuff I want/need.

Honestly, most women I talk to end up with TOO MUCH, my step-mother didn't have a baby shower (and this was her first baby) and said she ended up with so much stuff that my sister grew out of the clothes and she didn't use half of what she got.

I would not stress about not having enough. Just make sure you have the basics.

  • MIL ordered a new crib, we bought girl bedding (it was a STEAL at $50 for the brand-new set!), and otherwise I haven't bought anything. We did pick out the double stroller we want, most of everything else we either have already from DS, or we're waiting to find out what we're having in April. I'm starting to stock up on diaper coupons and might start stockpiling some of those when they go on sale, along with the smaller baby items that are not gender specific (i.e. breastfeeding supplies, bottles for when I pump, etc.). Just keep an eye out for sales, it helps a LOT!

  • Well, after my 16 week appointment, my husband and I bought the crib, mattress, and changing table. I've also bought newborn huggies x2 and a big box of size 1-2 huggies because they had a great price on them. I've started expanding my disney dvd collection as well as a cute (gender neutral) onsie, bib, and rattle.

  • After each Holiday we are getting "left over" baby clothes for those holidays next year. We already have a Halloween costume (size 3-6 months), Thanksgiving(size 5 months) and Christmas outfits (size 6 months) and have paid less then $5.00 each for them.

  • Let's see, so far we have bought:

Crib, chest of drawers, dresser/changer combo, glider w/ottoman, My Little Lamb papasan swing, a bouncer, crib mattress, 4-piece bedding set, mattress saver sheet thingy, window panels and valance, a lot of clothes in different sizes, a few diaper bag sized toys, two diaper bags, about 8 books, a lamp, two blankets, and some socks and a cute pair of Riley Roos shoes (i know they don't need them, but they were so darn cute and tiny!) Oh, and a bib and two burp cloths.

We have bought a lot, but started really early, and will continue to buy as we go, so its not a huge hit to our finances all at once. My mom has also started buying some things, as she will keep our son for the first year at her house.

Yep, you're right. I think the basic items will get me through the first few months for sure. Thanks ladies.
