I am a planner and really would like to get started w/ getting things ready for the baby. We're going to get the big items like the crib, changing table, and potentially a stroller since the one we want is a bit more expensive. A few of my friends told me that I should wait until I have all of my showers before getting things on my own (which would put me about 6 wks before my EDD). What are you planning to do with yours? This is our first; so we are starting from zero (we have no baby stuff except the ones that my mom has been buying for us), and we don't have a lot of family/friends that have hand me downs. TIA!
Re: In addition to the big items, what else have you started buying?
I've been told not to get anything else until the shower. I know my gf is planning a shower, though I don't know when. I'd prefer it to be earlier than later, since there's a good chance this baby'll come early.
I haven't bought anything, but we are going to buy the "big stuff"
I have NO baby stuff either but I am having my shower early so I have time to buy the stuff I want/need.
Honestly, most women I talk to end up with TOO MUCH, my step-mother didn't have a baby shower (and this was her first baby) and said she ended up with so much stuff that my sister grew out of the clothes and she didn't use half of what she got.
I would not stress about not having enough. Just make sure you have the basics.

Let's see, so far we have bought:
Crib, chest of drawers, dresser/changer combo, glider w/ottoman, My Little Lamb papasan swing, a bouncer, crib mattress, 4-piece bedding set, mattress saver sheet thingy, window panels and valance, a lot of clothes in different sizes, a few diaper bag sized toys, two diaper bags, about 8 books, a lamp, two blankets, and some socks and a cute pair of Riley Roos shoes (i know they don't need them, but they were so darn cute and tiny!) Oh, and a bib and two burp cloths.
We have bought a lot, but started really early, and will continue to buy as we go, so its not a huge hit to our finances all at once. My mom has also started buying some things, as she will keep our son for the first year at her house.
Yep, you're right. I think the basic items will get me through the first few months for sure. Thanks ladies.
