Anyone have anatomy scan at 16 weeks?

Our ultrasound place scheduled us for the anatomy scan at 16w. This seems kind of early. I asked my doctor at my last appointment and she said they like to do it early just in case there is something seriously wrong. She said they can see everything at 16w.

We are not planning on finding out the sex so I'm not worried about that. I trust my doctor, but just wondering if anyone else had the scan this early?

Re: Anyone have anatomy scan at 16 weeks?

  • Well, that is really odd, because when I went in for my big u/s at 17w3d, the u/s tech said they accidentally scheduled me too early, so she would go ahead and tell us the gender, but wouldn't be able to do the anatomy scan because everything would be too small. She said they usually don't schedule anyone before 18 weeks and that is the minimum they usually schedule at. Well, she brought the little guy up and immediately said she would be able to get everything because of the position he was in. She said she was amazed she got everything...so I don't see how they would be able to see everything at 16 weeks??

  • I'd go with your doctors recommendation. If that is when they schedule US then that is what their ultrasound techs are used to looking at. Worse case scenario is that it is a little early for some measurements and they have you come back for another scan in a couple of weeks. I'd see it as a win - win!
  • If you aren't planning to find out the sex then I would say worst case scenario they would have you go back in. I'm seeing a fetal specialist due to an abnormal quad screen result and although I had an u/s at 17 weeks scanning and measuring everything they will still have to do another one after I'm 20 weeks because everything is still so small.
  • They would not even schedule me for 1 day before 20 weeks.  My doctor said he does not recommend going anytime before 19 weeks.

  • So weird. I'll still go, because I specifically asked the doctor, but I hope I don't have to go back. It's tough for me to miss work and I have a feeling I'm going to have to start maternity leave a little earlier than I planned. Oh well, in the long run I guess it's not a big deal if we have to go back.
  • I had my anatomy scan at 16 weeks 3 days. They were able to see everything they needed to see!
