Multiples

My babies arrived 2/1 (late update!)

I went to my appointment on 2/1 (35w2d) and I felt like total crap. Tired, nauseated, achey, and seeing sparkles. BP was up a little. 2+ protein in urine. OB sent me over to L&D for labs. At that point she was thinking we'd move up my c/s from 2/12 to 2/2. (Both babies were frank breech.) My labs came back with elevated liver enzymes so the decision was made to deliver that day. Funny that after fighting off PTL since 28 weeks, being on bedrest, being on multiple meds, multiple hospital admissions, etc...PTL wasn't what got me, preeclampsia did.

It worked out well because my OB had to leave to take her son somewhere, but I had to wait a few hours to have an empty stomach. She came back later and she and the on call OB did my section together. My BP steadily rose every reading until the c/s, so I'm glad the call was made to deliver that evening. 160/100 was the highest I got, with a heart rate of 130. No wonder I felt like crap.

I got an epidural instead of a spinal since my back was swollen and the epidural needle is bigger than the spinal needle. Felt kind of weird but it was easier than I thought it would be. My legs never actually felt numb...just tingly. I was afraid it would have to be redone, but I was apparently numb enough because I didn't feel them pinch me, and next thing I knew I could smell cautery. ;)

Baby A, Katherine Naomi, born at 11:21 pm, 4 lbs 14 oz, 18 1/4 inches.

Baby B, Anastasia Ellen, born at 11:22 pm, 4 lbs 10 oz, 18 1/2 inches.

Neither needed any respiratory assistance. They had to go to NICU for 4 hours of observation since they were < 36 weeks and because I had GD and was on insulin. They did have a couple low blood sugars that night, but were able to recover with eating some formula. They came back to my room after that. I got put back on mag (had been on it for a week in January for PTL) for pre-e at some point after the C.

They did wind up going back to NICU at about 36 hours or so because they couldn't keep up their body temperatures and their bilirubins were increasing. They spent the rest of the time in NICU, but were able to go home with me on 2/5.

I feel like I'm missing quite a few bits and pieces of the first couple days after delivery, probably because of being sick and on mag and morphine. I've been sad about that. I'm hoping to go through our thoughts with DH to try to piece things together. I don't really remember the first time I held them, so I hope DH remembers. I do recall that the fundal massages HURT.

I started having more pain and more bleeding at around one week pp. Long story short, I had an infection and a blood clot in my uterus. Had to have a postpartum D&C. The clot was the size of a flattened grapefruit, per my OB. I bled out and got a bag of pitocin in the OR, plus a shot of methergine. Got another bag of pitocin over the course of the day. Wound up getting a couple units of blood the next day.

With everything going on I haven't really been successful at breastfeeding, but have been able to pump. I'm hoping that continues to go well since that feels like the only normal part of the whole pregnancy, with all the complications I had throughout.

It's funny though because I already feel like I want more kids. When I was still pregnant I was pretty sure I never wanted to be pregnant again. Now I really want to go through it all again. Well, not the complications...but the experience in general.

We have a fair amount of help at home, so that's been great with everything going on. The babies seem to have their days and nights mixed up at the moment, but otherwise are laid back and easygoing.

It's very surreal for them to finally be here. I was very afraid my whole pregnancy that I would feel totally detached when they were born, and not know what to do with them. Happily, I did not feel detached at all, and I have felt really happy (other than some baby blues.)

I could keep going, but I'll cut myself off there. :)
