19 weeks pregnant and just came down with a cold...

Hi ladies,
I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant and am coming down with a cold. It started with a sore throat on Tuesday and is getting progressively worse. Anybody experience a cold/sore throat during their pregnancy? Did you take anything for it - any good home remedies?

Thanks!

  • Ugh that's the worst. I had a cold also right around Christmas time. My doctor said that I could take sudafed for congestion, tylenol of course, and choloraspetic for sore throat. I actually found that gargling with warm salt water every hour helped my sore throad more - for some reason the chloraspetic made it even more raw and painful. Hopefully it doesn't last long and you feel better soo!

  • I agree with LALA and would add to use a neti pot every day.  I started using one early in pregnancy and have avoided being sick (knock wood) - unlike me.  It washes viruses/germs out of your sinuses so they can't settle in and stay as long, tip from a friend in nursing school.  Total lifesaver plus helps you to breathe.
  • I'm just getting over a cold.  As said above, Tylenol is OK for aches and pains, Sudafed or Mucinex is OK for congestion, and Cepacol for sore throats.  I also got relief from a humidifier and Vicks Vaporub.  My biggest lifesaver has been my neti pot.  They're very strange, especially if you're not used to using one but they do a great job of clearing out sinuses and keeping sinuses from getting too dried out.

  • I agree with the neti pot! I usually hold onto colds for weeks before I can get rid of them, this winter when I came down with a cold I tried the neti pot and my cold barely lasted a week.

  • Ugh! ?I am so sorry! ?I had a cold around 17 weeks and another around 21 weeks and it was tough. ?It was the coughing that killed me. ?The only thing that really helped was Tylenol Cold P.M. my OB recommended to help me sleep. ?Good luck!
  • Yeap, right around 20 weeks I got a wicked cold, with a rolling cough.  I took tylenol, robotusin (the regular kind only, that is what my OB said), and drank lots of hot water with lemon.  GL, it is not fun, especially the cough.  I was always worried how the cough affected the babies, but they did just fine.
