How do you clean cat pee out of...well, EVERYTHING

I'm so mad I'm shaking.

We just got home from a weeks vacation and my nephew (who is 31 years old) was supposed to be watching our house and feeding our 2 cats.  Apparently he didn't come to feed them for 6 days (we called the alarm company to check on what dates the alarm was disarmed/set) and the door to the basement where their litter box is was closed.

They peed on the bed (so many times it soaked through the duvet/cover/sheets to the mattress), the towels on the laundry room floor, DS's bouncy chair, his activity mat, and a few of his blankets/stuffed animals on his bedroom floor.

I am not mad at the cats at all - it's not their fault and I feel so bad they were all alone for that long!  I can't believe my nephew would do that, and then lie to us about it!

So, now I have to clean everything.  Any suggestions?  I have washed everything (except the activity mat) with regular soap and bleach, then again with vinegar and baking soda and the stuff still smells.

Frick.  I'm so mad.

  • oh man..... cat pee is horrid. It's nearly impossible to get just a little out. I hate to say it, but if there's that much of it, you might just have to replace everything because there's a good chance you probably won't be able to get the pee smell out.

What you need to do is find a good enzyme cleaner to remove the smell. I've heard Nature's Miracle is a good one. We never had much luck with anything, but that's because while we couldn't smell it, the cat still could and would keep peeing in the same spot. If you're lucky, the cats will go back to using their litter boxes and not use the smell as their new litter box.

I would ask on the pet board on the nest. They'll have some good suggestions as to what brand of cleaner you should try. GL!! That really sucks :(

You can buy it at any pet store.

I would toss anything that can't be submerged.  Cat urine is nasty, nasty stuff.

  • Oh my gosh - this would make me SOOOO mad! I love my cats, and I feel your pain. Poor little things. :( OK. They sell this stuff called Nature's Miracle. They sell it in giganic containers, so I would get however many you need. You can wash things in it, so I would wash the towels, etc... in that a couple of times. If you just wash it once, the smell will not come out - trust me, I've had that problem. Then, I would poor the Nature's Miracle (undilluted) on the mattress, scrub with rags, dry with a fan, vacuum, repeat a couple of times. For your LO's stuff, I would probably use something more mild. You MAY be able to wash the stuffed animals in the machine on a very delicate cycle. For the chair/activity mat, I'd probably dilute the Nature's Miracle solution, clean it a couple times, then clean with just water to make sure the chemicals don't irritate LO. Also, just a head's up, the stuff does get rid of the smell, but it's pretty strong, so you'll need to keep air flowing throughout the room for a few days. Good luck, and again, so sorry you have to go through this.
  • Nature's Miracle or another enzymatic cleaner made for pet urine.  A black light will help you find all pee spots.  :(  That sucks-  I would be livid.

  • Pet stores sell something called "Nature's Miracle" - you can put it in the laundry with your load and it gets the smell out.  You can also put it on carpet and whatever else - I LOVE this stuff, it's the only thing I've found that works.  Good luck!  And I hope you call our your nephew!  That's soooo unacceptable!
  • Honestly, if the smell doesn't go away after a million washings, you may be SOL.  And even if you can't smell it, the cats probably can and may go back to the same spots now.  Hard to say, really.  But keep washing everything in HOT HOT HOT with Oxiclean and see if that works.

I have two elderly cats that pee in our unfinished basement. It sucks, and even Nature's Miracle won't deter them!  Sigh!

I'd also look into a cleaning company that does Crime Scene recovery and ask them for advice. My neighbor does this and it's amazing what they can remove!

But honestly, I'd probably go out and buy new and send the bill to your nephew.   Then sue him when he balks at paying up.  Arsehole.  How is a 31 year old so irresponsible?  Did you know he was this lame before you enlisted him to help you out??  What was his excuse??

  • I agree with PPers on Nature's Miracle. Soak in it and let the items air dry. I've also had some luck with soaking more washable items in Oxy-clean and then washing them regularly. Good luck!

  • Go to PetsMart and get some stuff called Nature's Miracle. We used it to clean up some accidents on our carpet and it worked like a charm.

So sorry...I know how upset I would be if I came home to all that. Hope it all gets worked out.

  • Sorry to say, you most likely need a new mattress.

  • Maybe he did feed them, just never set the alarm and didnt open the room to the litter box cause he would just run in and feed them without paying attention? Either way, thats terrible and im sorry that he was unreliable.

Like a pp said, maybe Oxyclean, Natures miracle works on smaller stuff ive found, and you can get that at any petstore. Honestly, when my cats pee on something I usually just end up throwing it out. No matter how much I clean it I can always smell it.

    Sorry =/

  • For the items that can be laundered, try using apple cider vinegar or white distilled vinegar (if they are whites). My cat used to pee on our clean clothes and I would wash them with vinegar added to the load. Completely took the smell away!
