I didn't think about this before I started touring daycares but one thing to look at is the playground material. I went to one and they had either little pebbles or mulch. When I went to the other and saw they had a thick padding on the ground I thought "of course, the kids could put the little pebbles in their mouths, nose, ears, etc".

You also might want to check to see that the slides aren't made of metal, which tends to get EXTREMELY hot in the summer months.  I know most playground equipment is plastic now, but some older daycares may not have replaced metal slides.
