XP: What can you tell me about Binghamton?

I posted this a few months ago but can't recall if it was the Bump or Nest side.  I got some good replies but can't find the post and the PM's I had disappeared in a nest server glitch, so forgive me

Looks like I will be moving to the Binghamton area.  I am starting to look at homes online but I am not sure what areas are good areas to be in or which ones should be avoided at all costs   There seems to be so many little villages and towns too.  I am trying to narrow down the search a little bit.

We will have a toddler and a newborn and would like to be in an area with parks and families etc.  We don't want to be in the middle of no where and have to drive to everything if you know what I mean.

Anything else you can share would be great.

I lived in Owego, which is about 20 minutes from Binghamton.  It's a quaint tiny town with antique shops, gift shops, and beautiful parks and views.  But it is tiny and you often have to leave the town to do any major shopping.  If you're interested you can PM and I can tell you more about it.  I was the county curator for Tioga County so if you're looking in an area outside of Tioga, I know very little about it.

Feel free to PM me! I've lived here since I was child in 1985 and my DH is a complete native. Even though I struggled with the idea of staying here when I was younger, I've found this is a good place to be for now, especially since family is right around us. The Binghamton area is not quite like NYC where there are areas you simply don't go to at night, most of the places that are run down are pretty obvious with a basic drive through.And for the size of the town, it does quite well with access to theater/arts. I think the key thing to think about if you'll be here for several years is the size/quality of your school district. The larger ones here have graduating classes of 300-400 students, while those on the outskirts can still have great services and be a bit smaller with classes around 120-170. Good luck!

There are lots of smaller towns/villages adjacent to Binghamton, and living in northeast PA is a pretty quick commute too.  That's where I live....taxes are low, as well as housing prices and general cost of living.  I like the Binghamton area...we lived outside Philly for five years and moved back home once the kids hit school age.
