When will they learn to...

play w/ each other... to be 100% honest i am TIRED of playing w/ a baby.  I would like 5 min to not baby talk! they HATE sitting up in anything bumbo boppy bouncer they HATE tummy time all they want is to sit in the crib at stare at the mobile or lay in thier bouncy seats or be held! please tell me soon they will start to want to do something that doesnt involve me?!?!??!

Re: When will they learn to...

  • just sit them in the bouncy seats and do what you need to do... there's no way i'd play with babies ALL day - I never have and never could- i'd go batty! Sometimes they need down time, too - so staring at their mobiles in the crib for a little while is a great thing!

do you get out of the house much? that also is something my boys loved - change of scenery - and i'd just walk around a store or the mall - just to be out and not having to talk baby talk the whole time :)

Around 6mo is when they start to sit on their own - that changes play a LOT.  My guys are playing together right now --well, parallel play- but on the floor together rolling around having fun - while i'm online watching them from the couch... I think it's good that they learn how to entertain themselves without mommy/daddy facilitating the play all the time.

  • 3-4 months and just little over was a TERRIBLE stage for me!  I hated it, mainly for the reasons you speak of.  it was stressfull in our house in general at that time..  I can totally relate.  My girls don't "play" with each other yet, but they are entertained for longer peroids.  They will actually sit in their bumbo chairs and their bouncy seats where before they wouldn't.....do you have an activity mat bec that is a life saver for me.  The girls just roll around all over it and play with the toys that hang from it...i've added some to it too!  Good luck, i totally feel your frustration!
  • right about 5 months things started changing and getting better for me but I totally agree with everything Goldie had to say too!
  • Between 5 and 6 months I think you'll see a HUGE improvement in them becoming more independent.  They can sit up, they can jump in their jumperoo/exercauser, etc.  Hang in there.  Can you lay them on the floor under some toys and go back and forth between them and whatever you are doing?
  • Ditto what Goldie said. It was around 5-6 months that they loved playing in the jumperoos and were rolling around on the floor and getting into the toys. They don't so much play with each other, they are on a blanket and play with the toys, look at each other, but stick to independent play for now.

  • things are tough early on!  when they are sleeping less than a newborn, but not able to do anything yet... i remember saying, "what am i supposed to DO with them?"

ours are a little premature, so i think they were a little more cognatively aware before they could do some physical things.  they started rolling over just before 7mos, and that helped, as they have a different perspective on their tummies.   they could "fight" over a toy, roll into each other, laugh together.

there's no way around it... tummy time is crucial.  mine didn't like it either.

the fact that they like looking at the mobile is a good thing.  put them in there together, and go do what you need to do.

  • I just wanted to let you know that I know how you feel.  I used to think I need to occupy their every second and now I don't. I lay them on their activity mat and fold laundry or do chores.  I try to talk to them while I am doing it but honestly, sometimes I use the time to catch up with one of my girlfriends on the phone.  I figure they hear my voice anyways and wont know if I am talking to them or my friend, lol.

I also cant wait until the time they are more interactive and it makes me excited that they should be at that stage in the summer. DH and I already have big plans to "hang out" with the babies Smile
