IUD users come in

I'm going to be getting the Mirena soon. Apparently they insert them at the hospital here. I'm still not completely sold on the issue. Is it painful? Did you have any side effects? TIA

Re: IUD users come in

  • I loved mine! My insertion was a little painful (but I'd still do it again!), my doc forgot to tell me to take Advil before the insertion. I bled for about 2wks, then had a period the first month, then nothing. No more periods usually. I think in the 2yrs that I had it, I had maybe 3 periods...? Extremely light, only lasting about 3-4 days.

I will get one again after this baby, it was so nice not to worry about taking a pill every day.

  • Insertion was like a slight pinch and a bit crampy, but not even as bad as menstrual cramps for me.  No side effects so far (been in since September), although I have paraguard not mirena.  So far this is the best form of BC I've ever used since I don't have to think about it in the least.

  • Insertion was very painful for me, but apparently I have a uterus that tilts back (that explains the back labor, anyway!).  I have had just about every side effect that comes with it and will be discussing possibly having mine removed at my annual exam in April (I've had it since Jan '09).  I know plenty of women who have one and love it, though, so it's hard to tell if it's right for you unless you try it.
  • I felt absoultely nothing when it was put in. I spotted some that day and cramped the next day, but other than that it's been great. I love not taking a pill everyday!
  • I guess I'm the odd ball here. I had Mirena put in in Sept., but I have no kids. The insertion was very painful to me and I had cramping for about 4 weeks. I've still not completely figured out my cycle, since Mirena decreases periods, and I transitioned off of BCP. Each month I'm experiencing pain on my left side. When I called the doc they said "it's probably just shifting." That scares me. I've started tracking my cycle to make sure it's not just ovulation pain, but I may have to get it removed soon. I do LOVE that I don't have to worry about remembering to take the pill. Hope it helps and GL.
