1st Trimester

If your first ultrasound showed an empty sac...

Did you have a later ultrasound that showed that everything was fine, and that the first one was just done too early?

or

Did you end up miscarrying?

This happened to me yesterday---by dates I am supposed to be 6 weeks, 4 days, but I know I ovulated a bit late.  They saw an empty gestational sac that measured 5 weeks, 1 day...

I'm going back in next Monday for another ultrasound.  My doctor didn't seem the least bit concerned, but I'm SUPER worried...

Re: If your first ultrasound showed an empty sac...

  • Waiting is the only way to know.

If you weren't charting and don't know your exact O date then it is impossible to know if the sac is measuring small b/c the baby isn't viable or if it is measuring small b/c you O'd later than you thought.

I knew my conception date (to the hour) because we did IVF and at 4w5d we saw two sacs and two yolk sacs.  We saw the same at 5w1d.  And then saw 3 heartbeats at 6w0d.

    Best of luck.

  • This happened to me with DS.  And yes, we went back a week later and saw the little heartbeat flickering on the screen.   I hope everything turns out okay,  GL!

  • The wait is the worst part - hang in there!

We saw an empty sac (measuring 6w0d) at 5w4d and then a baby/heartbeat at 6w5d.

  • This happened to me. I had a u/s at what I thought should be 6 weeks (I used OPK's and was fairly certain of ovulation) and the u/s said 5 weeks, 1 day. The sac was empty, though they did see a tiny yolk sac. I also had been having some bleeding so was freaking out at this. I had a follow up u/s 3.5 weeks later and everything was in there perfectly fine, and had caught up to the dates of my LMP. They said 5 weeks 1 day was just too early to see much of anything else. I hate early u/s's and hope I never have to have one again! All it did was worry me!
  • Could they catch a glimpse of the fetal pole or a yolk sac? My u/s tech had a really hard time finding it but eventually we found a glimmer of what she said appeared to be the yolk sac. That was at 6 weeks exactly. I knew when I o'ed so the measurement of 6 weeks was right on. We could not detect a heartbeat.

I just went back to today, at 8 weeks, and we saw/heard the heartbeat.

  • Happened to me at 6wks, then went back at 8ish and everything was perfectly fine.
  • Same thing happened to me and I was freaked because I miscarried early the month before. ?It turns out I ovulated late and everything was and still is perfectly okay. ?When I went back, there was a fetal pole and tiny "blip" (the baby). ?GL! ?I am now over 20 weeks. ?Try not to worry (I know, easier said than done.).

  • We had the exact thing happen. We were supposed to be 7 weeks according to my lmp . The placenta measured at 5 weeks a couple days and they could only see the placenta and yolk sac. So we scheduled a second ultrasound for 2 weeks later (at 7 weeks a couple days, according to the size of the placenta) and we not only saw a little jelly bean baby but we heard the heartbeat!:) Its super super common so rest at ease and just wait till your farther into your 7th week. Good luck!
  • Well I guess I'm the only one that had a negative experience in that when i went in at 6 wks all we saw was an empty gestational sac and I had a d & c done 2 1/2 wks later.  Follow up ultrasounds showed some progression but at 8 wks & 2 days at my  final ultrasound there was clearly not a baby there.  I hope you have a good outcome like everyone else but mine unfortunately did not end good.

Good luck to you.  believe me the waiting SUCKS!

  • This happened (almost exactly!) to me...according my LMP, I should have been 6 weeks 1 day at my first sonogram, but all they saw was a gestational sac and yolk sac measuring 4 weeks 6 days.  I had to wait 3 and a half agonizing weeks, and went back at 10 weeks 2 days.  There was a beautiful gummy bear baby and strong heartbeat!

Hang in there!! I know its soo hard!
