What is the lesser of these two evils (food question)

DS is big into dipping his food and eats so much better when he can dip.  What is the lesser of these two evils... ketchup or ranch dressing?  (nutritionally speaking)

Convenience wise- I prefer white stains to red stains any day!

  • I would think ketchup.

  • Ketchup is high in sugar, so I guess ranch dressing?  But the dressing probably has more calories...

  • Ketchup for the lycopenes, right?  What nutrients are in ranch dressing?  I hate ranch, so I'm biased.
  • I say ranch, although I've got no medical evidence to back up my hunch.  Ketchup seems nutritionally nothing, whereas ranch has fat.  Fat is bad for us after age two, but good before, right?

Have you thought about trying hummus?

  • um ketchup has vit C and lycopene and a shitton of sugar

    ranch is all fat...

I think ketchup wins.  Compare the labels, maybe ranch has a secret magical ingredient that I never thought of :)

  • I would say Ketchup, and you can find low sugar versions of it.  I prefer the taste of it.
  • Ketchup. Didn't you know ketchup is a fruit? Lol but reallyud rather give ketchup than ranch even though I know the stains are worse. Do you have a low cal/low fat ranch?
  • Ranch is pretty high in sodium compared to ketchup.  My kids eat ranch almost every day with their baby carrots, though.  It isn't much, and we use the low or no fat version.
  • you should make (or buy at the deli counter in your grocery store) tzatziki!
  • Ketchup has tons of high fructose corn syrup. I'm not "that mom" in the obnoxious commercials, but I do try to avoid it as much as possilbe.  Not all ranch dressings have HFCS, especially if you make your own (easy and keeps for awhile).
  • Our store brand, Publix, has "organic" ketchup with no corn syrup in it. Tastes more real to me too. Anways, DD gets both, if it helps her eat something, but I would say ketchup is probably better. I guess, cause both are pretty crappy nutritionally!

  • Ketchup - it's practically a vegetable!! Plus, doesn't it have lycopene or something else that is supposedly healthy?

  • you could make some veggie purees for him to dip with. izzy just likes dipping, she doesnt care what the flavor is. sometimes i give her applesauce to dip her chicken into as an alternative to ketchup.
